PAS says directive ordering school canteens to remain open during Ramadan excessive - SUN - 13/03 11:32 am

ALOR STAR : PAS has expressed worry about the Education Ministrys directive to keep school canteens open throughout Ramadan, calling it excessive. According to The Star , Datuk Ahmad Yahaya, head of the Pas Ulama Council, emphasised that closing school canteens during Ramadan is a cultural and religious practice to respect fasting Muslims, particularly students who are training to fast

directive in haste, claiming it was insulting to the holy month of Ramadan. This was owing to Sideks announcement that school canteen operators should continue to operate throughout Ramadan. She stated that it is typical operational procedure for schools throughout the holy month. She did, however, say that schools should give non-Muslims with counsel and instruction in order to teach them mutual respect for those fasting. Meanwhile, Yahaya stated that all parties should begin educating about the value of fasting, particularly Muslim students. Additionally, the PAS representative claimed This can be handled harmoniously without the need for directives to keep canteen operations running while students observe Ramadan. This doesnt mean were preventing non-Muslim students from eating during the day. Its also a form of education for them to respect Ramadan while in school. They can bring packed meals and eat in designated areas. Thats sufficient without the need for a directive to open canteens, which is seen as excessive, he asserted in his statement today. Non-Muslim students will also appreciate the significance of fasting even without coercion, he went on to say. What foods will best prepare me for a day of fasting? - Theguardian - 12/03 10:00 pm

Email feast@theguardian.com The best meals to set you up for a period of fasting Muslims around the world have now begun Ramadan, fasting from sunrise to sunset every day for a month, and we are also well into the Christian period of Lent

Thats not to say the latter approach is for everyone: Intermittent fasting can be seen as a fad diet, and Im not pro fad diets, dietitian Priya Tew says. Avoid food wastage during Ramadan, 90,000 tons dumped last year: CAP - SUN - 12/03 2:17 pm

President Mohideen Abdul Kader underscored that studies reveal a 15 to 20 percent surge in food wastage during Ramadan compared to other months. Ramadan is supposed to be a month of worship for Muslims but for some people, it is a month for feasting and wasting money

and wasting money. Islam tells its people to avoid being greedy, wasteful, and extravagant, he said in a statement today. He pointed out that one of the purposes of fasting is to experience the hunger faced by the poor and marginalised, thereby fostering empathy within the community. He further emphasised that with over two million Palestinians currently facing hunger, Malaysians should not be wasting so much food during the holy month. Mohideen also urged Muslims to refrain from breaking fast in hotels, encouraging them instead to do so at home or in mosques with family and friends. Invite non-Muslim neighbours to join in breaking fast. This can foster goodwill and understanding among our diverse society, he suggested.-Bernama

Ramadan: Time for social media fasting - SUN - 12/03 1:46 pm

KUALA LUMPUR : The Islamic holy month of Ramadan, commemorating the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad, has arrived. It is the third pillar of Islam and the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, during which Muslims across the world observe a strict fast from dawn until sunset each day

social media, experts said. Commenting on the issue, a lecturer at the Department of Quran and Hadith Studies, International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), Mohamad Haeqal Ishak said basically, Muslims are urged to not cause harm to others in any manner, as such actions are deemed sinful, especially when directed towards fellow Muslims who are regarded as brothers and sisters within the faith. As stated by Prophet Muhammad SAW, A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue and hands. And a Muhajir (emigrant) is the one who gives up (abandons) all what Allah has forbidden, he told Bernama. According to him, these include cyber bullying or posting offensive comments on the social media toward fellow Muslims. Whats worse if such actions or behaviours are taking place during Ramadan, a month full with barakah (blessings), he added. Committing a sin during Ramadan, he said, shows that the individual does not respect the holy month when other Muslims are striving to obtain the most barakah (blessings) from the holy month, with the hope of attaining great rewards as promised by Allah SWT. Unfortunately, the holy month is marred by offensive and harmful acts by certain quarters. As such, Muslims should observe Ramadan in accordance with Islams spiritual objectives and teachings. By avoiding the prohibitions and focus more on their faith, Muslims can experience a truly transformative and spiritually uplifting Ramadan. It would be a waste for those who experienced hunger and thirst daily during Ramadan end up as bankrupt in Allahs eyes due to the sins they committed such as gossiping, mocking and defaming others. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah RA, the Prophet said: Many people who fast get nothing from their fast except hunger and thirst, and many people who pray at night get nothing from it except wakefulness. (Ibnu Majah 1690). As such, dont be a Muslim who wasted their fasting through their actions and behaviours that nullify their fast, he added. Beware of content sharing As such, it is incumbent upon all Muslims, who are still hooked on the social media, to ensure they only share positive content as a mark of respect during the holy month of Ramadan. Mohamad Haeqal said the concept of ihsan (excellency in deeds and charity) is a matter of taking ones inner faith and showing it in both deeds and actions, a sense of social responsibility borne from religious convictions. Muslims who are ihsan will always be aware that Allah is Ever-Watchful and knows Allah is watching everything under every circumstance. This should make us more aware of Allahs rights over us and of our duty towards Him. They are always aware that two angels (malaikat), on the right and the left, record their deeds. Hence it is important to be careful with what we do in our daily lives. Besides that, being fair and just, we will be able to reflect on what we have done to others, its as though we can feel their pain and sufferings, to the extent that we can no longer bear to do injustice to others in the future. Such acts include typing and writing words that could hurt other peoples feelings, he said. According to the lecturer, if Muslims understand jalal (majesty), one of Allah attributes (greatness), they would definitely realise that every bad deed will be judged and punished by Allah in the hereafter. Are we prepared to be tormented in the blazing and horrifying fire in hell while even a slight fever, we become lethargic. Is it worth it when with just several words (posted online), we will be tormented in hell for thousands of years? If we reflect on this issue, we wouldnt dare to do it or for that matter hurt others from any aspect and form, he said. As such, he said, the best practices that will reap pahala (rewards) from Allah are from good deeds, namely through ethical words and writing. Those who promote good ethics through words and writing will be rewarded (by Allah) based on their dakwah outreach activities. Besides making it a practice to multiply reciting the Quran in the blessed Ramadan, the Muslim community can perform their acts of worship together. Stop wasting time on activities that will not bring benefits in terms of gaining rewards during Ramadan, such as idle chat or writing negative stuff, he said. Appreciating Ramadan Ibadah (acts of worship), which encompasses the notion of devotion and submission to Allah, said Mohamad Haeqal, has many benefits that can be gained individually or collectively. Individually, he said, fasting is a form of physical training and can strengthen a Muslims spiritual connection with Allah. According to him, fasting imparts sympathy to the poor for whom hunger is a common experience, adding that fasting also provides the body with an opportunity to detoxify and cleanse itself. From the spiritual aspect, Muslims are not only trained to exercise self-restraint from all actions that invalidate the fast but also towards other matters that could reduce their rewards from fasting. Qanaaah, an attitude of being grateful for what Allah has given and feeling content with it all, is developed through Muraqabah al-Nafs (mindful of our ego), he added. Collectively, he said Muslims should realise that fasting is a way of appreciating the concept of being grateful and ihsan as fasting trains an individual to empathise the sufferings of our impoverished fellow Muslims, especially Palestinians in Gaza, who are currently faced with food insecurity as well as security and health threats. Muslims who truly appreciate this will be more grateful and practise the ihsan concept as well as not waste their time; instead, they will be at the forefront in helping the needy, he said. More empathy Meanwhile, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Universiti Malaya, Dr Mohamad Saleeh Rahamad said ethical language does not merely apply during Ramadan, but it should be observed by every individual in their daily lives and that society should be on guard against the use of abusive or foul language. In the Malay culture, the phrase budi bahasa (virtues) is uttered as one word, which means a noble person who protects his language as a mark of high integrity, he said. He said that today, the social media serves as a platform for expressing opinions and allowing news to be shared freely given the absence of a gatekeeper, and as such users are free to showcase their expertise on any issues as part of their psyche or to reflect their state of mind. They should think before writing as it can affect other peoples feelings. If there is obscenity, defamation or provocation that can result in animosity, this is not just considered a sin but can also have an adverse impact on the community, he explained. Asked on the attitude of keyboard warriors who express aggressive or controversial opinions online while hiding behind anonymity during Ramadan, Mohamad Saleeh said, the desire to air their opinions become uncontrolled when an individual regards fasting as routine or ritual. For example, writers, who specialise in whatever field or genre, must realise that as long as their actions have negative impact on others, they will continue to be burdened with sins. Those who dont appreciate the true meaning of fasting will find it difficult to exercise self-restraint without being controlled by a visible authority, he added. Writers for example, if they leave their writing that can have a bad influence on readers, their sins will multiply. As such, leave positive writing for readers as that will be their harvest in the afterlife what they sow in this world, he added. Fasting, good training According to Mohamad Saleeh, the restraint and devotion felt during Ramadan will make them better Muslims as they are expected to strive to make those feelings and attitudes stay and carry over during their normal lives. During fasting, there are prohibitions and without questions asked, they must obey. This means that the servants of Allah must obey Him without questioning His intention or reasons why He placed the commands for us to follow. If theres a secret or blessing from health or other aspects, thats a bonus. Whats important is fasting trains Muslims to obey Allahs command without any human control. For example, while we can eat at a place that is hidden from the public, we wont eat as obedience to the command of Allah is an obligatory duty, he said. While resisting the urge to convey thoughts with negative vibes during Ramadan, he said, the people should embrace empathy. What if we are being condemned and defamed through other peoples writing, how do we feel? Obviously we will be hurt, angry and want to retaliate. Similarly, others who bear the brunt of our actions will also retaliate. Think 10 times before writing something negative as its effects will not stop and in fact, the consequences will be prolonged, he added.-Bernama

India to enact divisive citizenship law - SUN - 11/03 10:42 pm

NEW DELHI : Indias interior ministry said Monday it was enacting a citizenship law that critics say discriminates against Muslims, just weeks before the worlds most populous country heads into a general election

who entered India from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh before December 2014 -- but not if they are Muslim. On Monday, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the rules would now come into force. These rules, called the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules 2024, will enable the persons eligible... to apply for grant of Indian citizenship, the ministry said in a statement. Many among Indias 200 million Muslims fear the law is a precursor to a national register of citizens that could leave them stateless in the country of 1.4 billion. Many poor Indians do not have documents to prove their nationality. Prime Minister Narendra Modi denies this, saying that Muslims are not covered by the legislation because they do not need Indias protection. The National Register of Citizens, a list of all legal citizens, has so far only been implemented in the state of Assam. Besides stoking concern among Muslims, the proposed changes also sparked protests by residents unhappy about an influx of Hindus from Bangladesh. The immigration rules do not include migrants from non-Muslim countries fleeing persecution to India, including Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka and Tibetan Buddhists fleeing Chinas rule. It also does not address Rohingya Muslim refugees from neighbouring Myanmar. Modis Bharatiya Janata Party promised the laws implementation in its 2019 election manifesto. India is expected to soon announce dates for the general election, likely to be held in April-May, with Modi widely favoured to win a third term in office. Rights groups have previously condemned the law. Human Rights Watch calls it discriminatory and that, for the first time in India, religion is a basis for granting citizenship. - AFP

Criticism over Gaza crisis - SUN - 11/03 10:14 am

Interestingly, the likely winner of the upcoming US presidential election, Donald Trump, is an even staunch supporter of Israel. However, many Democrats do not trust his fidelity to Israel even though he openly dislikes Arabs and Muslims

injured, not counting the long-term effects of malnutrition and starvation. Most victims are women and children. All of Gazas hospitals have been wrecked by Israeli bombs and tank fire. The Biden administration has thoughtfully rushed tank shells to Israels armoured forces. Large stores of arms and supplies, supposedly provided by the US to Israel for an emergency, have been offered to Israel to continue its massacre of Gaza. Such action violates US law, which bars the use of US-supplied arms against civilians. Dropping 2,000lbs bombs on residential buildings is, according to Israeli spin doctors, counter-terrorism. The rest of the world does not think so. Except of course the US, Canada and Britain, where the media is dominated by supporters of Israels now governing far right, and Washington which is paralysed by pre-election fever. Palestinian terrorists are purposely running into Israeli tanks, shells and bombs just to discredit Israel. Big-money financial donors are terrorising major US and British educational institutions. Writers who dare challenge Israels party line on Gaza are blacklisted. Those honourable Jews who denounce Israels brutal policies in Gaza are denounced as self-hating Jews. We are not told that Gazas terrified civilians originally came from areas around Gaza and Galilee when they were driven into the prison camp of Gaza from their historic homes by ethnic cleansing and massacres after 1948. Their lands were seized by the Israeli government or far-right settlers, many from the US. As yet, we know little about the alleged massacre of some 1,000 Israelis attending a music festival on former Arab lands. I know this region fairly well after visiting the kibbutz of Nahal Oz in the 1950s to meet relatives and see how Israel was allegedly making once supposedly barren lands flower and blossom. There were no such people as Palestinians, according to Israels then-prime minister, who herself hailed from Ukraine. Israels governing far right was described by the late, great Israeli writer Uri Avnery as Jewish fascists. They intend to grind Gaza and its people into dust. There are large numbers of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, some of whom were gunned down recently. The objective of Israels far right is to expel these Arabs from the entire West Bank that Israel seized in the 1967 War and shove them into the arid Jordanian desert. Israel has long had its eye on southern Lebanon and its Litani River waters. Do not worry what Washington will say, said the architect of this mess, the late General Ariel Sharon. I control Washington. True enough, as Biden and his party are showing. Wall Street donors have become more important than Americas geopolitical interests. Interestingly, the likely winner of the upcoming US presidential election, Donald Trump, is an even staunch supporter of Israel. However, many Democrats do not trust his fidelity to Israel even though he openly dislikes Arabs and Muslims. Trump appears to have a clearer idea of where Americas interests lie he may not allow Israel to lead America around by the nose. Israels North American partisans keep running old films about the Holocaust to help justify their laying waste to Gaza. We ought to remember there were less than half the number of Jews in the besieged Warsaw Ghetto than there are Palestinians today in Gaza. Americans should be ashamed of Biden. His administration, infiltrated and directed by far-right neocons, does not represent Americas values or traditions. Gaza will remain a major crime as well as a dark stain in Americas honour. Malaysian halal food products penetrate market in 150 countries - Mat Sabu - SUN - 9/03 4:25 pm

KOTA KINABALU : Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the export of processed food products with halal status has now successfully penetrated more than 150 countries which includes 1.8 billion Muslims globally

corners of the world. It is the desire of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) to see local products penetrate the international market, he said. Therefore, KPKM and other related ministries always support the efforts of the local food industry activists to develop products and services at the global level via various government incentives whether in the form of advisory services, training, funding grants and tax incentives. He said this when officiating the Sabah International Food Expo 2024 (SIFEX2024) at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here today. SIFEX2024 highlights food products, beverages, SMI (small and medium industries) products and fruits involving 300 business booths to be filled by entrepreneurs from Sabah, Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia as well as foreign participants. The three-day event, which started yesterday, ends tomorrow (Sunday) and is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Meanwhile, Mohamad Sabu said digital technology in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era is currently affecting all levels of the agro-food value chain. Digitalisation coupled with innovation and eco-innovation to gain a more sustainable competitive advantage. In other words, digital technology is the key to transforming the way food is produced, processed, sold and consumed, he also said. In this context, we can always see the extraordinary success of entrepreneurs, especially among the youth who are more synonymous with social media influencers, successfully doubling their sources of income by increasing sales of local products through social media platforms, he added. Accordingly, he believes that the youth of Sabah are also capable of producing food products that can potentially be marketed and sold throughout the country using digital application platforms, both online and offline. - Bernama

Orang Melayu Lebih Elok Jangan Kerja Di Tempat Berikut - OutSyed - 7/03 7:10 pm

Oleh Zaid Ibrahim @zaidibrahim Vending Machines An MP from Pulai suggested that beer now be sold through vending machines to prevent Muslim workers in convenience stores from touching the bottle. According to many Muslims, they are not to drink alcoholic beverages and are not allowed even to touch the bottle

drive any vehicles carrying beer bottles. No Malay customs officers should be allowed to inspect beer consignments and impose duties. Lastly, the Ministry of Finance need to employ more non-Muslims quickly as many business and commercial activities in the country are not halal-type Recently, a well-known Muslim preacher advised a Muslim architect not to follow the instructions of his boss to sketch and draw a plan for a temple, failing which he should look for other work Looking for a job is hard, but its more problematic for a Muslim who follows the preacher's advice. A website of a religious authority advised Muslims not to work in conventional banks as they are haram. A Muslim cant work in any establishment thats not halal Since we have thousands of preachers giving advice freely on matters of religion, and this advice has far-reaching consequences and economic ramifications, the govt needs to introduce an agenda for deliberation in the forthcoming Conference of Malay Rulers : The debilitating influence of preachers on the economic advancement of the Malays My Comments : Can Malays or should Malays travel to non-Muslim countries? Because in non-Muslim countries almost everything is not halal. Their women do not cover their aurat. So should Malays travel to such countries - for any reason at all. What beneficial knowledge can Malays possibly gain from non-Muslim countries? Because it is the same knowledge that makes the non-Muslim countries not halal in almost every aspect. It is their same knowledge which makes their women expose their aurat. So why should Malays go to non-Muslim countries to acquire knowledge which have made them non-Muslim and not halal in the first place? Should Malays be restricted to travelling to Muslim countries only? Should the passports say : " The bearer of this passport is restricted to travel to member countries of the Organisation of Islamic Countries only "? Or something similar? The economy will have no choice but to hire more non-Malays. But there are fewer non-Malays. So their salaries and wages will go up. Non-Malays will be paid more than Malays. Ability to speak Mandarin will NOT be an advantage. Ability to handle non-halal products will be a significant advantage.

The bak kut teh??issue shows the depth of our mistrust of each other - Sinchew - 6/03 10:59 am

Such a simple issue shows such depths of mistrust, disunity and selfish ignorance on the concept of history, politics and nation-building by politicians and professors. Firstly, as a Muslim, all I can say to my fellow Muslims about _bak kut teh_is: __Janganlah makan

related to Islam, that _bak kut teh_is a "__babi__"dish. I am purposely being vulgar for this is to me the stupidest and most vulgar issue. Secondly, and this is the more serious issue that the dish cannot be considered "__warisan__"because it does not have a long root in history. These critics were implying that since the Chinese were "__pendatang__"of only two hundred years or so, they cannot claim as "_warisan_"to this land. A third criticism is saying that _bak kut teh_can be pronounced as "__warisan kaum Cina__"but not of Malaysia. Such a simple issue shows such depths of mistrust, disunity and selfish ignorance on the concept of history, politics and nation-building by politicians and professors. Firstly, as a Muslim, all I can say to my fellow Muslims about _bak kut teh_is: __Janganlah makan. Tiada siapa suruh kamu makan__. Why must all things __warisan__or heritage to Malaysia must tiptoe around Islam? Tanah Melayu was said to have had Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms thousands of years ago. We had the Langkasuka Kingdom, the Srivijaya Kingdom, the Majapahit Kingdom, the Funan Kingdom, The Chi-Tu Kingdom and so many Indian-sounding names to reel of twenty more. Where do we get off letting Islam govern our sense of __warisan__? The Jawi script is as __warisan__as the pallava script. The Malay language spoken 1,000 years ago is incomprehensible to most Malay citizens of this country. Never mind that. I cant understand a damn thing the Kelantanese people say if they talk in their __pekat__dialect. Similarly, my children could not make out what I say when I __cakap Utara.__ So, what's the beef? Is our __warisan__the age of Islam or our __warisan__goes further than that? I hear that there is _bak kut teh_in Singapore prepared by Chinese Muslims as a halal dish. __B___ak kut teh_, for the sake of ignorant professors, simply means a meat bone dish, thus it can be made from any meat product of beef, chicken or others. There is also one variety that has no meat at all for vegetarians who do not take meat. __Apa masalah?__ Secondly, the idea that people who are __pendatang__like the Indians and the Chinese coming with the influx of indentured laborers and the rise of tin-mining negates the presence of Laksamana Cheng Ho and his entourage as well as Princess Hang Li Po. It was acknowledged by Professor Khairuddin al-Juneid in his book about Malaysia's history that it was Chen Ho who prevented the whole of Tanah Melayu from being conquered and dominated by the Siamese Kingdom. Islam would probably have not survived in that environment at all. Similarly, Chinese new villages saved Malaysia from becoming a slave to Communist China a short time ago. Thirdly, with the formation of Malaysia, we must all embrace every tribe, ethnic group or religious faith as our own history and __warisan__. It is sad to find Malay professors seating comfortably in their positions accepting fat salaries from the taxes of _orang kafir dan bukan Islam_, and yet these professors are proponents of racial and religious disharmony from their pittance of knowledge on Islam and history as well as their selfish hearts of "me against the other." I have said many times in my writings and speeches that we must train a new group of academics, teachers and graduates that all our history belongs to all of us! We have to teach the new generation all that we were and all that we once were, as well as all that we are now are us and belong to all of us. When we discriminate against others not of our tribe, we are tribal thinkers like the old nomads and primitive societies of the past. According to young Jewish historian-scholar Yuval Noah Harari, __Homo sapiens __began to dominate the Earth because of some things they possessed which animals could not: the idea of a shared history, a shared vision, and a shared purpose across tribal instincts of survival. __Homo sapiens __could have a common idea of good life and a common idea of survival. That is why they could amass together to beat the strongest mammoth, saber tooth tigers and Megalodons of the sea. A nation is the same. It is an idea of a common destiny wrought from a common and shared __warisan__or history that will determine the stability and resolve of its people as a single force to a civil or a __madani __society. But if Malay professors start dividing the nation into __lu, lu punya hal,__and __gua, gua punya pasal__, then let us not blame politicians anymore and train our guns on those teaching our children in schools and universities. Before this issue, I thought politicians would destroy our country, but now I think the bigger culprits could be selfish teachers in our universities. __(__**Prof Dr. Mohd Tajuddin Mohd Rasdi**__is Professor of Architecture at a local university and his writing reflects his own personal opinion entirely.)__ ### Malaysians should respect Najib as a man, as a leader and as a fellow citizen ### The five challenges of Islamic conservatism in Malaysia ### The politics of nasi beriani mamak creates unity while Tun M creates enemies ### The fire attack on Ngeh and the issue of religion-politics ### More Chinese have the stomach to face life-changing gastric surgery ### Affordable, convenient: Why more people in Singapore are relying on mobility scooters ### Low number of Chinese in civil service a flaw in government

FT, Terengganu, Sabah, Penang announce zakat fitrah rates - SUN - 5/03 9:37 pm

KUALA LUMPUR : Three states and the Federal Territories today announced their respective rates of zakat fitrah (tithe), based on the current price of rice according to the grade and type commonly consumed by Muslims

Territories. Minister in the Prime Ministers Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Naim Mokhtar, said that the rate of RM7 for zakat fitrah is based on one gantang Baghdad, equivalent to the price of 2.7 kilogrammes (kg) of rice commonly used by the community in the Federal Territories. Meanwhile, the other two rates are RM15 per person for consumers of premium imported rice and RM22 per person for consumers of basmati rice. He said this when met during the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) here. In TERENGGANU, State Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIDAM) president, Datuk Shaikh Harun Shaikh Ismail, said that the zakat fitrah rate is set between RM10 to RM22 per person according to the grade and type consumed. In PENANG, the State Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP) has set three rates of zakat fitrah, namely RM7, RM14 and RM21. For those who consume imported rice such as parboiled rice, Thai rice, imported white rice, brown rice and the like, or equivalent the rate is RM14. For those who consume fragrant rice, glutinous rice, basmati or similar types the rate is RM21, he said. In SABAH, the zakat fitrah rate is set at RM7.50 for each Muslim in the state, based on one gantang Baghdad measurement, equivalent to 2.7 kg of rice consumed by the majority of the states population. Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) president, Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin, said that a total of 2,200 amil representatives have been appointed to oversee the collection and coordination of zakat fitrah throughout Ramadan this year. - Bernama

Something I Wrote 10 Years Ago - OutSyed - 4/03 8:02 am

It is a very quick read. *APOSTASY: QURAN VS BIBLE* [Adopted from QRN and BIBLE, by Syed Akbar Ali, Saturday, May 17, 2014] Muslims say the QRN was revealed to the Prophet

represents the true teachings of the Prophet. So here is a true teaching of the Prophet in the QRN. 4:137 "Surely, those who believe, then disbelieve, then believe, then disbelieve, then plunge deeper into disbelief, Allah will not forgive them, nor will He guide them in any way" This true teaching of the Prophet in the QRN proves there is no punishment of any sort for apostasy in the QRN. If it is any punishment Allah will not forgive or guide such a person. The verse describes a person who believes, then disbelieves, then believes, then disbelieves and then continues in disbelief. There cannot be a death penalty because he or she can only move in and out belief like this if he is alive throughout this process. There is no death penalty for apostasy mentioned in this verse or anywhere else in the QRN. The punishment of death for apostasy is written in the Old Testament of the Bible (which I know modern day Christians do not follow anymore). Here it is : Deuteronomy 13:6-11 If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter or the wife you embrace or your friend who is as your own soul entices you secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known, some of the gods of the peoples who are around you, whether near you or far off from you, from the one end of the earth to the other, you shall not yield to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him, nor shall you conceal him. BUT YOU SHALL KILL HIM. Your hand shall be first against him TO PUT TO DEATH, and afterward the hand of all the people. YOU SHALL STONE HIM TO DEATH with stones..." Muslims say Christians are the Ahli Kitab or People of the Book. Quite obviously because Christians read the Kitab a.k.a. the Bible. About the people of the Book (Ahli Kitab) the QRN warns Muslims: 3:100-101: "O you who believe, if you obey some of those who received the scripture, they will revert you, after having believed, into disbelievers. How can you disbelieve, when these revelations of Allah have been recited to you, and His messenger has come to you? Whoever holds fast to Allah will be guided in the right path" So Muslims, "how can you disbelieve, when these revelations of Allah have been recited to you"? What revelations? 4:137: "Surely, those who believe, then disbelieve, then believe, then disbelieve, then plunge deeper into disbelief, Allah will not forgive them, nor will He guide them in any way"

BERSIH - Organizing Peaceful Assembly or Not? If needed reforms did not come after 1 year - why wait? Local Government Elections? - Charleshector - 17/02 3:25 pm

There were also social attempts to dissuade protesters. Religious authorities told Muslims ahead of the Bersih 5 rally that staging demonstrations would invite foreign intervention and run contrary to Islamic laws

affiliations. A DAP supporter may not participate in a protest organised by PN eventhough he/she supports the call, but would participate if it was BERSIH or some non-party partisan groups is organizing. But, sadly some believe that BERSIH and many other human rights groups were 'compromised' after GE14 - unwilling to protest against PH >>> always talking about 'giving more time' even in the face of obvious wrongs committed that angers justice loving persons. Even now, after the recent discontinuance of Zahid Hamidi's criminal case, Najib's pardon, etc - BERSIH is still waiting 'giving more time' - ' ready to organise another mass demonstration against the government if it does not take concrete steps to implement promised institutional reforms in the coming parliamentary meetings.' HOW LONG BEFORE BERSIH MOVES? Is BERSIH still independent, or is it sympathetic to Anwar Ibrahim, a former ABIM leader? Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz has been elected as the new Coalition for Clean & Fair Election (Bersih) chairman for the 2023-2025 term... Muhammad Faisal was the former president of the Muslim Youth Movement Malaysia (Abim) from 2019 to 2023 and deputy chairperson of Bersih from 2018 to 2020. How many Parliamentary meetings... until the end of this government's term in office? If BERSIH has no intention to organise a peaceful assembly - do not deceive the public...and maybe others will take the initiatives..A peaceful assembly's timing - best after something that angers the public, and Najib's pardon was such an event - it will be ineffective to wait several months for the issue may be 'forgotten' like Zahid's DNAA has become,...SO, BERSIH SHOULD DO IT NOW AND NOT WAIT ANYMORE.. Many in Malaysia are waiting for the opportunity to express their unhappiness or 'disappointed' with the Malaysian government, now under the premiership of Anwar Ibrahim and his PH led government... Anyway, with the draconian Peaceful Assembly Act still in place - will BERSIH even be allowed to organize a peaceful assembly at the Dataran Merdeka, etc > or will they be forced to do in in some closed stadium or in some field far away from the public eye? I wonder...I wonder... Sadly, often they cannot hope for their 'elected representative' MPs to raise their issues, especially if it a criticism of current government policies and practices - because most PKR,DAP,Amanah or UPKO MPs appear just too 'afraid' to express views publicly that are critical of PM Anwar(also the Chairperson of PH) or his government >>> for the worry is that if they do, they may be 'penalized' by the party or get in the 'bad books' of ... Despite Anwar's government backtracking on election promises or party promises, how many PKR, DAP or Amanah MPs even spoke out about SOSMA, Sedition Act and its continued usage... MPs - they are in name, but their failure to SPEAK OUT publicly their views and the people's concerns especially if it is against Anwar or their own political parties is disturbing... So, who speaks for the people of Malaysia? Sadly, for many - it goes back to the people themselves to speak out for themselves... Going into GE15, many people voted against BN and voted for PH. But, then PH formed a coalition government with the 'enemy' BN, and BN/UMNO leader the Deputy PM position, and even made one of the BN leaders the Deputy Finance Minister...Well, it is true that PH had little or no choice after PN decided that it will not form a unity government with PH, and the Sarawak/Sabah MPs also did not. Left with no choice, PH formed a coalition government with BN...maybe the only option between becoming government or remaining Opposition. Such coalition with 'enemy' is common place in many jurisdictions. BUT, then when it came to the subsequent 6 State elections, PH formed an electoral pact with BN - when, it would have been best to contest the said State elections alone, and after the results came out decide whether to form a coalition government with BN or any other party IF AND ONLY IF PH failed to win sufficient seats to form government on its own. Hence, what the PH did could be seen as a 'BETRAYAL' of the people - something that warrants the immediate resignation of all PH MPs - If GE was held today, will PH still have the support of the people and win the majority of seats again? The new 'unity government' has since then abandoned a lot of REFORMS that was expected by PH - none of the bad laws like Sedition Act, SOSMA, Detention Without Trial laws, etc were even repealed, let alone amended after all this time to remove the draconian provisions contained there in. Local Government(Council) election promise was 'forgotten' ... Then, recently we had the pardon of Najib, the discontinuance of criminal case against Zahid... Of course, the people may have much grievances against PM Anwar Ibrahim and his government...and one way that they can really express their grievances, expectations,..is maybe through a PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY ... and so, there is likely to support when BERSIH said it was planning or rather contemplating the holding of a PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY (so, is it all talk by BERSIH). BERSIH in the past had demonstrated that it had the capacity to get tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands to participate in peaceful assembly... BUT post GE14, BERSIH suffered a loss of credibility - when its leader was co-opted to contest as a PH MP(who was then dropped come GE15), and other key personalities were given government or PH-linked positions. The result was BERSIH's image - it was seen as a pro-PH movement. It must dispel such perception and reclaim its image as an independent pro people movement...not a 'tool' of any political parties. Can it? BERSIH's ability to get peoples' support was because it was seen to be independent of political parties despite the fact that many Opposition parties grabbed the opportunity to subsequently support these BERSIH organized peaceful assembly... Bersih has not invited Perikatan Nasional (PN) to join in protesting the reduced sentence for former prime minister Najib Razak, says coalition secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin...When asked if PN would join the electoral watchdog at such demonstrations, Hamzah said both parties must first discuss the issues they should collectively fight for. It was absurd for PN to suggest that it will not support a BERSIH protest unless ' both parties must first discuss the issues they should collectively fight for.' BERSIH can invite views from all quarters, including political parties but ultimately BERSIH must independently act...of course inviting all, persons and parties to join... Remember, the people are not just unhappy with PH-led unity government but also some of the matters in PN governed states - or just positions taken by some political parties and/or politicians. PN can organize its own peaceful assembly and determine the issues they fight for in their peaceful assembly - WHY DON'T THEY? Sadly, many political party simply is not confident enough that they can attract Malaysians from all walks of life, religion, ethnicities, etc to come out for a peaceful assembly...NO GUTS. Even the government fears that they will not get the peoples' support if they organize a peaceful assembly - so, even such an assembly is heard, we hear rumours of people being 'paid' to attend, 'ordered' to attend... BERSIH organised peaceful assemblies according the people the ability to express their many grievances against the government - but there has been NO BERSIH organised peaceful assemblies after GE14, after PH became government ousting the BN rule and domination of the Federal Government. The last big BERSIH Protest happened on November 2016. The rallyhighlighted five demands: clean elections, clean government, strengthened parliamentary democracy, the right to dissent, and empowerment for Sabah and Sarawak under the tagline Satukan Tenaga Malaysia Baru (Stand United New Malaysia). The demands are still valid in 2024 - Will BERSIH act and lead? Will they organize a PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY ... Bersih warns Putrajaya of fresh protest unless reform agenda put back on track The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) today told the Putrajaya that it was ready to organise another mass demonstration against the government if it does not take concrete steps to implement promised institutional reforms in the coming parliamentary meetings. Picture by Hari Anggara. By Zaf Seraj Wednesday, 07 Feb 2024 2:40 PM MYT PETALING JAYA, Feb 7 The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) today told Putrajaya that it was ready to organise another mass demonstration against the government if it does not take concrete steps to implement promised institutional reforms in the coming parliamentary meetings. Bersih demanded that the government begin delivering on the reforms promised during the 15th general election in 2022, including the separation of the attorney generals functions and the restoration of Parliaments independence from the executive. The people urge the government to implement the 100 per cent reform agenda without compromise. Bersih will not hesitate to mobilise the people to take to the streets as this is the language best understood by those comfortably in power, regardless of the various excuses given, said Bersih chairman Faisal Abdul Aziz in a press conference here today. Faisal said the government must implement these reforms as they were promised the election manifestos of the coalitions that were now in power. He added that the priority was for structural reforms, and that his organisation would closely monitor the next parliamentary meeting for progress on these promises. Faisal said Bersih was issuing this warning due to recent developments that show the derailment of the reforms agenda. Bersih and other NGOs present at the press conference expressed their disappointment with the governments failure to reveal the advice submitted to the Pardons Board on Datuk Seri Najib Razaks pardon application as well as the discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) given to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for his corruption charges after the courts had determined prima facie. Faisal said that while there is no legal obligation for the government to explain, it still has a moral responsibility to do so in matters that were of significant public interest. Aliran executive committee member K. Haridas clarified that the public were not questioning the Yang di-Pertuan Agongs discretionary powers enshrined in the Federal Constitution, but rather the governments advice on Najibs pardon application. Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) program director Azura Nasron complained of the lack of transparency in the matter, asking why Najibs application was expedited over those of death row inmates made previously. Electoral watchdog Bersih has organised five massive protests considered to be inflection points in the evolution of Malaysias political landscape, beginning with the first in 2007 - Malay Mail, 7/2/2024 Hassan backs Bersihs call for protest, says reforms taking too long Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim says the slow pace of reforms has left the people disillusioned and disappointed in the unity government. Anne Muhammad - 09 Feb 2024, 10:51am Election watchdog Bersih held rallies in 2 and 2016 over the 1MDB scandal. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: PKR veteran Hassan Karim says Bersih should take to the streets to protest the sluggish pace of reforms under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahims leadership. The Pasir Gudang MP said the issue has left the people disillusioned and disappointed in the unity government. So it is only natural if Bersih decides to take to the streets to voice their protest against Pakatan Harapan (PH) and the government under Anwars leadership for their failure to implement the changes as promised, he told FMT. Hassan Karim. Last Wednesday, Bersih warned that it would not hesitate to organise street protests again if the government does not commit to its institutional and political reform agenda. At a press conference, Bersih chairman Faisal Abdul Aziz said Malaysia was in a critical period of democratic transition that required the coming together of all parties to realise reforms. Bersih will not hesitate to mobilise the people back to the streets, a language comprehensible to those in power who have been dismissing the peoples aspirations with excuses against supporting reforms. We urge the government to implement the reform agenda without compromise, he said. Faisal also said the handling of recent corruption cases involving political elites, including former prime minister Najib Razak, had left the public as well as civil society organisations disappointed and angry. However, government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said the government has never forgotten about the institutional reforms it once promised, adding that it is one of the main agendas pursued by Anwars administration. Hassan said Bersihs fight for free and fair elections also included demands for reforms as pledged by PH in their election manifesto. The people have very high hopes for the reforms promised, he added. Hassan pointed out how between 2018 and 2020, the previous PH government led by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had also failed to implement the promised reforms, with the latter claiming that the PH manifesto was not a bible. So when Anwar, a leading advocate for reform and who spearheaded the movement back in 1998, became prime minister, of course people anticipated the promised reforms, but more than a year into the Anwar administration, reforms are progressing too slowly, he said. Bersih has been holding protests since 2007 to shine a light on alleged electoral malpractices and to push for fair elections. It also held rallies in 2 and 2016 over the 1MDB scandal. - FMT, 9/2/2024 Thousands gather for Zahid DNAA rally despite police warnings The participants then head to the Dang Wangi police headquarters to lodge a report. Ahmad Mustakim Zulkifli September 16, 2023 1:40 PM Share Members of the PAS crowd control unit escort the participants of the 'Save Malaysia' rally as they move from Kampung Baru to the Dang Wangi police headquarters to lodge a police report in Kuala Lumpur, Sept 16. Crowds today gathered for the "Save Malaysia" rally in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, to protest the attorney-general's decision to halt the corruption trial of Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Dressed in white, they gathered at the Kampung Baru mosque after the afternoon prayer, carrying placards calling for the Umno president to be re-prosecuted. They then began moving to the Dang Wangi police headquarters, where a police report will be lodged by the organiser's secretariat, Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz. Those in attendance included activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin or Chegubard, who was released following his arrest several days ago, Bersatu information chief Razali Idris, and Pejuang information chief Rafique Rashid. 'Save Malaysia' participants move from Kampung Baru to the Dang Wangi police headquarters to lodge a police report. Tun Faisal earlier said in his speech that no gathering would be held. "We want to express our desire, guaranteed under the constitution, that there was something amiss when Zahid was given the DNAA," he said, referring to the discharge not amounting to acquittal granted to Zahid for 47 charges of corruption in the Yayasan Akalbudi case. "Before the election, they promised they would jail Zahid, not put him in Putrajaya." - Malaysia Now, 16/9/2023 After Bersih 5: Fear and Repression Continue in Malaysia While the latest rally went off peacefully, that should not overshadow an ongoing crackdown. By Khoo Ying Hooi November 23, 2016 Credit: Jiannoi93 via Wikimedia Commons The much-anticipated Bersih 5 rally in Malaysia has finally concluded in a relatively peaceful manner, despite some minor incidents in the evening of November 19 amidst a downpour. Bersih 5 is intended to pressure the government toward a new, reformed Malaysia through institutional changes to the countrys flawed governance system ahead of the 14thGeneral Election, due by 2018. The rallyhighlighted five demands: clean elections, clean government, strengthened parliamentary democracy, the right to dissent, and empowerment for Sabah and Sarawak under the tagline Satukan Tenaga Malaysia Baru (Stand United New Malaysia). As investigations on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal continue, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razaks administration has become increasingly repressive and authoritarian. While Saturdays rally wasoverall considered as peaceful due to theheavy police presence in cordoned-off Kuala Lumpur to prevent apotential clash between the Bersih yellow shirts and Red Shirts it is not an indication that state repression has decreased. A day before Bersih 5, there wasa series of heavy-handed attempts to intimidate activists and opposition leaders. Fears of clashes between Bersih and Red Shirts were real after the latter threatened to target Bersih supporters. It was a dramatic Bersih eve, with more than a dozen from the Red Shirts and the Bersih group arrested. The pre-rally arrests had the result of causingmore fear forpotential protesters that intended to participate in the Bersih 5 rally the next day. Many are also angry that Bersih co-chair Maria Chin Abdullah is being held under the countrys anti-terror law, Security Offenses (Special Measures) Act 2 , which allows preemptive detention for up to 28 days. There were also social attempts to dissuade protesters. Religious authorities told Muslims ahead of the Bersih 5 rally that staging demonstrations would invite foreign intervention and run contrary to Islamic laws. In the Friday sermon prepared for mosques nationwide, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) highlighted the Islamic way of changing leaders faults through advice, prayers, and assisting leaders in virtuous matters. A day after the rally, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that more individuals would be arrested. Arguing that the law must be respected, he is reported as saying that a list of individuals involved in the Bersih 5 and Red Shirt rallies have been identified, but the names will not be disclosed. On the rally day itself, there was a strong police presenceon standby, with Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) trucks and lots of barricades. Approximately 7,000 policemen were on duty to ensure security and public order. Water cannon trucks were also deployed. Traffic at 58 roads in seven areas in the city was divertedstarting at 7 am on the morning of the rally itself to keep the two rival groups from meeting. he rally organizers original plans to convene in Dataran Merdeka for the finale was halted by police as various barricades were erected along main roads leading to the square. Eventually, the organizers made eleventh hour plans to convene the crowd in Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC), and the rally was allowed to proceed as planned with no interruption from the police. Former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad turned up unannouncedjust after 2 pm in Bangsar; this marked his second time participating in a Bersih rally. According to estimates from the police, there were about 15,000 protesters from Bersih group and 2,500 from the Red Shirts. The online portal Malaysiakini estimated that more than 40,000 protesters marched in the rally organized by Bersih. Malaysiakini estimated the number of Red Shirts who also took to the streets at around 4,000. As the protesters were not allowed to converge at meeting points before they decided to gather at KLCC later in the day, it is difficult to estimate the exact number who turned out. However, turnout figures areno longer a direct reflection of the support received by Bersih in view of the repressive situation, which does not encourage people to come out and protest without feeling fearful. Whilesome have suggested that political fatigue is setting in among Malaysians, dimming enthusiasm for political rallies,it is equally important to understand that Malaysia does not have an enabling environment for peaceful citizen action. What could explain the pre-Bersih crackdown this time around is the real fear the government itself has towardcitizen action. The much-predicted clash between the red and yellow shirts did not happen, due to the heavy road closures by the police. The police managed toprevent the two groups from clashing; however, in blocking off roads they also impinged on the right of protesters to march peacefully. Although the police were even-handed in their treatment of both groups, the heavy road closures were unnecessary. While some argue that repression is hinders popular mobilization, due to the added costs associated with mobilizing, others insist that repression potentially increases grievances which could lead to more united collective action. This is Bersihs fifth rally and this year marks the movements10thanniversary. While many have argued Bersih has achieved little in demanding the government make meaningful reforms, one interesting trend that has emerged is that how state repression influences Malaysians ability to challenge the government. Although state repression limits protests, over time it has also facilitated the continuing growth of civil society in the country, which then led to the crippling of the governments political legitimacy. Najib argued that it is unlawful for any party to try to unseat a democratically elected government via street protests, saying that the people should wait until the next election to choose their government via ballot box. But the crucial issue remains: toppling a democratically elected government and reforming the election process are interlinked issues.
