The event, organised by the mission in collaboration with the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC), was aimed at promoting Malaysia as a travel destination for Namibians, a statement from the High Commission said. Acting High Commissioner Datuk Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya in .. his welcoming remarks highlighted Malaysias position as a leading destination for healthcare, gaining significant international recognition in recent years, including the Medical Travel destination of the Year by the UK-based international Medical Travel Journal. Compared with places like New York and the United Kingdom, he said the cost of living and medical healthcare in Malaysia are not only more affordable, it also provides access to world-class healthcare, making it an ideal spot for Namibians seeking medical treatment and leisure. He noted that as of 2023, Malaysia had welcomed about 70 health travellers from Namibia, with gastroenterology being the most sought-after treatment. He also highlighted the 90-day visa-on-arrival policy for Namibians, describing it as a key advantage for visitors. More Namibians should seek good and affordable healthcare in Malaysia while their families can enjoy their holidays in Malaysia a symbiosis between both health and tourism sectors, he said. Additionally, he said Malaysia has received more than 23,000 health travellers from the African continent. During the engagement session, Rameez assured that Malaysia offers seamless healthcare access and emphasised its readiness to explore collaborative opportunities. The event was attended by key figures from Namibias health and tourism sectors, including Dr Armid Azadeh, chief executive officer of the Medical Association of Namibia, and Ben Nangombe, executive director of the Health and Social Services Ministry. |
21/11 7:46 am | National Cloud Computing Policy to be finalised by year end - Ministry of .. KUALA LUMPUR: The National Cloud Computing Policy is expected to be finalised by the end of this year, according to the Ministry of Digital. In addition, the ministry said the National Digital Department is revising the cloud framework agreement, which is part of the ministrys ongoing efforts to improve policies related to cloud computing. The establishment of new data centres and cloud services can support and drive the digitalisation of government services and further improve the efficiency .. of government service delivery, said the ministry in a written response published on the Parliament website yesterday. The ministry was replying to a question posed by Ahmad Fakhruddin Fakhrurazi (PN-Kuala Kedah) about its plans to develop Malaysias downstream economy after receiving high investment in the digital sector, especially in the development of data centres. According to the ministry, Malaysias fast-growing data centre industry supports the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) by providing the basic infrastructure for AI. It said that until August 2024, more than five AI-ready hyperscalers have been developed across the country. The availability of AI-ready basic infrastructure will attract more high-value investments from global technology companies into the country, it said. The Ministry of Digital has also identified 200 potential local companies as AI technology service providers in line with the governments efforts to make Malaysia a generative AI hub under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030. |
21/11 7:43 am | Hajiji calls for grassroots support to address poverty in Sabah KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has called on elected representatives, district officers and grassroots leaders to report cases of poverty and hardcore poverty to the Sabah government through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) secretariat. He also announced plans for an engagement session with non-government assemblymen on Nov 28 to gather comprehensive data on affected households. I have directed the SMJ Secretariat to organise this session to refine the list of identified Heads of .. Households (KIR) and Household Members (AIR) eligible for aid in their respective areas. This effort is crucial to ensure no one is left behind in the hardcore poverty eradication programme in Sabah. I believe the actual numbers of poor and hardcore poor households are higher than those previously reported, Hajiji said when winding up the debate on the 2025 Sabah Supply Bill yesterday. Yesterday, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said as of September, Sabah recorded 3,978 hardcore poor households and 68,089 poor households. During the debate, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (Warisan-Senallang) suggested that poverty classification in Sabah should consider entire households rather than focusing solely on KIR data. In Sabah, a single house often accommodates three or four families. If the KIR is categorised as hardcore poor, surely the other families in the same house should be classified similarly. Relying only on KIR data can be misleading. Lets also recognise that eight of the 10 poorest districts in Malaysia are in Sabah, he said. Hajiji agreed, highlighting the importance of accurate information from grassroots leaders to address the issue effectively. This is why its essential to channel data to the SMJ secretariat. Poverty and extreme poverty remain widespread, and we must work together to free our people from these hardships. Collaboration is key, Hajiji said. |
21/11 7:13 am | Adopting Goldilocks range in AI use SHAH ALAM: Artificial intelligence (AI) is steadily revolutionising the media landscape in Malaysia and around the world, offering journalists new tools to enhance efficiency and improve news quality. However, experts stress the need for balance, emphasising that while AI presents undeniable advantages, it also raises challenges that must be carefully managed. Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam head of Communication and Knowledge Advancement and senior lecturer Dr Wan Hartini Wan .. Zainodin said AI could significantly strengthen news production. Time is precious in journalism, and delivering accurate news promptly is crucial. AI helps accelerate the process of gathering information and writing tasks, allowing journalists to focus on creating high-quality content. She said AI is a powerful tool that enhances creativity when used correctly for activities like transcribing interviews, analysing audience engagement and fact-checking, adding that with it, journalists would have more time to focus on investigative stories and in-depth reporting. Wan Hartini also said AI is a valuable asset in video editing, translating content into different languages and adding subtitles, making news more accessible to a wider audience. However, she stressed that media organisations must provide proper training and work closely with universities to ensure journalists are equipped to adapt to this evolving technology. Reskilling and upskilling are essential to maintaining a balance between AI and human effort, she said. Meanwhile, UiTM journalism lecturer Fadzillah Aishah Ismail said the challenges AI brings to journalism include ethical risks. Transparency is key and journalists must adhere to ethical principles, double-check facts, and ensure objective reporting to maintain trust and credibility. She said AI could potentially contribute to misinformation if not used responsibly, such as in terms of bias, plagiarism and privacy violations that could occur if journalists fail to uphold ethical standards. AI is a tool, not a replacement for journalistic integrity, she said. According to her, AI lacks the emotional intelligence and cultural understanding needed for storytelling, especially in a diverse country like Malaysia. She also said AI cannot replicate the human touch that makes stories meaningful as empathy and cultural sensitivity are irreplaceable in crafting narratives that resonate with audiences. Fadzillah added that universities play a big role in preparing future journalists for an AI-driven industry. At UiTM, students are encouraged to use AI responsibly, with an emphasis on critical thinking and ethical practices, she said, and stressed that while AI can be useful for brainstorming ideas, students must create their own content. They are taught to balance AI tools with hard work and dedication to ensure authenticity in their reporting. While both experts agree that AI is reshaping journalism, they emphasised the importance of maintaining a balance between technological advancements and human creativity. AI is here to stay, but it is not a miracle cure. Journalists must embrace their evolving roles and ensure integrity remains at the heart of newsroom culture, Fadzillah said. She added that AI can assist, but it cannot replace the human touch. Journalism is about connecting with people, and that connection relies on empathy, authenticity and cultural understanding. |

Meanwhile, Nanta said KKR proposed that the route be reopened to the public starting Nov 25, from 7 pm to 7 am, while slope and road repair works continue during the day. Therefore, we would like to seek the cooperation of all parties, not just the Public Works Department (JKR), KKR, and the state government, but also local representatives and the public. I understand that this is a vegetable farming area, so I appeal for everyones patience as these works must be properly completed. If not, the road will remain unsafe and pose risks to lives, he said in response to complaints from vegetable farmers regarding the road closure. On Oct 23 at 8 am, the Kinta District JKR received a report of a landslide at the federal route. The estimated height of the landslide was 70 metres, with a width of 100 metres. Following the incident, a traffic management plan was implemented immediately at the site, involving the closure of one lane with 24-hour monitoring by the concessionaire on the same day. Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin, however, assured that 82 temporary relief centres in the Kemaman district that can accommodate up to 40,000 evacuees are ready to be activated at any time. That is the estimated number of victims due to heavy rainfall and rising sea levels. Based on the continuous heavy rain forecast by the .. He said that the decision was made to allow ADS, the ground handling service provider, to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. It is understood that the staff member involved in the incident is .. from AeroDarat Services, not Malaysia Airport Holding Berhad (MAHB). The staff claimed to have been provoked by the passenger issued with the NTL. The situation led to physical contact and verbal exchanges. Whatever the situation is, we cannot defend the staffs action, he told a press conference at the Parliament building today. A 25-second video of the incident, showing a fight between two individuals at KLIA 1, recently went viral, prompting police to investigate under Section 323 of the Penal Code. Loke said that the staff must remain professional in any situation, even when confronted by rude passengers. He added that, according to established procedure, managing any NTL passenger falls under the responsibility of the airline, not the Immigration Department or MAHB. It is an international standard, applied at all international airports. In this case, MAHB has provided a room for the NTL passenger to wait for his return flight, he said. NTL notices are issued to passengers for various reasons, including having a blacklist record or failing to provide necessary documents, such as a visa, return flight ticket, or hotel accommodation, as required by immigration regulations. |

We still need the support and assistance of parents to monitor their children, particularly their purchasing activities and what they do outside of school, as we may not have information on how they are obtaining the (vape) supply. However, at the school level, guidelines are in place, and strict disciplinary actions will be taken if students are found guilty of violating the school rules, she added. |

Its deputy minister Fuziah Salleh said KPDN is considering the use of batch numbers or serial numbers as a potential tracking method to curb the smuggling of subsidised cooking oil. When products leak and end up at the border, we need to trace the source back to .. the packaging companies. However, the challenge is that we do not know where the leakage is occurring whether at the packaging, wholesale or retail level. This could be a mechanism to pinpoint where the issue lies, as currently, all parties are shifting the blame, she said during the winding up of the 2025 Supply Bill (Budget) at the committee stage for KPDN in the Dewan Rakyat today. Meanwhile, Fuziah said the contract for Price Monitoring Officers (PPH) will be extended for another year in 2025, with an allocation of RM41 million. For the long term, we are studying the possibility of absorbing these officers into a contract of service. This study is ongoing, and by the end of the year, the findings will be presented to the ministrys management, she added. Currently, 990 Price Monitoring Officers are conducting checks on 480 items at wet markets and supermarkets. The data collected is recorded in the Price Catcher system, helping KPDN monitor the prices of goods. If you want to know the average price of chicken in Peninsular Malaysia, or the prices of vegetables like tomatoes and sawi, this is all tracked through the work of PPH. They monitor prices daily, she said. The Dewan Rakyat later approved a total allocation of RM2,076,903,700 for KPDN under Budget 2025. |

20/11 3:51 pm | Malaysia to prioritise trade, ASEAN capital market connectivity ahead of .. KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia will prioritise enhancing trade facilitation among ASEAN countries and strengthening the connectivity of ASEAN capital markets, recognising the strategic importance of its capital market as the country prepares to chair ASEAN in 2025, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. He stated that one of Malaysias key priorities under the finance track of next years ASEAN meetings will be establishing mechanisms to enhance trade facilitation among member nations .. and streamline payment systems across ASEAN. Furthermore, the minister added that a key priority is to enhance the integration of ASEAN capital markets, with a focus on enabling initiatives such as mutual recognition of new initial public offerings (IPOs) across the region. It is a key part of our objectives to collaborate with our ASEAN counterparts to strengthen and enhance connectivity within the regions markets. ASEAN holds significant power as a trading bloc, he said during a Fireside Chat Session at the 63rd World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) General Assembly and Annual Meeting today. Amir Hamzah, however, said that at this moment, the penetration of cross-ASEAN trades is lower than what they anticipate or believe it can be. If we can get over the mental block that a connected ASEAN achieves a bigger cake for everybody by working together, then I think the future for ASEAN is bright, he added. ASEAN, comprising Malaysia, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, represents a formidable bloc with a population exceeding 700 million across the region. Amir Hamzah emphasised that ASEAN can achieve more effective results when working together, particularly on climate change issues. As the world confronts the challenges of climate change, he highlighted that ASEAN must focus on the actions of individual countries, supporting a just transition and facilitating capital raising for the greening of the economy. He noted that while capital markets are important, global multilateral agencies also play a crucial role in reducing costs and aiding the transition. |

According to data released by the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department on Nov 15, small lorries, trailers and container lorries were the highest contributors to accidents involving commercial vehicles from January to September, with 168 cases recorded. |

20/11 2:34 pm | Fahmi calls for overhaul of JENDELA Phase 2 process, review of tower site .. PUTRAJAYA : There is a need to overhaul the entire implementation process of Phase 2 of the National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiative to ensure the effectiveness of the programme, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. In fact, he said that the process of selecting tower sites must also be reviewed, following several issues, including the unfinished tower construction and delays in providing connectivity by the companies entrusted with the task. I want the entire process of .. Phase 2 of JENDELA to be overhauled, and the process of selecting tower locations to be reviewed. Just imagine, some contracts have already been issued with specific locations, but after two years, the companies suddenly say, Oh, we cant build there. To me, thats nonsense, he told reporters after attending the Ministry of Communications monthly assembly here today. Fahmi also expressed concerns regarding the unfinished towers under Phase 1 of JENDELA, particularly in Sabah. In Sabah, out of the 382 towers that were supposed to be delivered, only 215 have been completed and handed over so far. Of that number, only 61 per cent or 130 towers, are on air. This is very, very unsatisfactory. Every time I go to Sabah, we hold discussions with the companies entrusted with the task. They signed the contracts and agreed to do the work, but they are unpunctual and behind schedule, he said. Elaborating, Fahmi said that these delays also involve major telecommunications (telco) companies that have failed to fulfil their responsibilities. In some cases, there were towers that had been completed for more than nine months but still not on air. I have called the CEO (of those companies) and gave them a stern reminder. I told them that they have to get this done. Or else, Ill put their name and phone numbers at the tower to let the people know who is delaying and stalling. After this, I want every Member of Parliament (MP) and state assemblyman (ADUN) to know which company is assigned to complete the towers and which telco is responsible for providing the connectivity, he stressed. Fahmi said JENDELA is a non-commercial programme aimed at helping people in rural areas who are still struggling in terms of telecommunications coverage. This is a programme for the people. Moving forward, I will ask MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) to send a letter to every MP and ADUN to inform them of which telcos have failed to complete the work after the towers have been built, he added. JENDELA, which was launched in 2020, is a government initiative aimed at improving coverage and the quality of communication services nationwide. |
