MTL: JPNIN Kelantan to send 40 unity squad members for flood training - SUN - 21/11 7:56 am PASIR PUTEH: The Kelantan National Unity and National Integration Department (JPNIN) will send 40 Unity Squad members for training in preparation for the Northeast Monsoon (MTL). JPNIN director Ahmad Nazif Mohamad said the squad members involved are expected to undergo training at Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu, in the middle of next month. We will send all members of the Unity Squad in Kelantan to participate in training sessions, including rescue operations and other preparedness activities, to .. face potential floods. Meanwhile, at the neighbourhood watch areas (KRT) level, we will also carry out area clean-up operations and assist residents once the flood recedes, he told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the state-level Kenali Budaya Kita programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Cherang Ruku, here yesterday. The MTL, commonly known as the monsoon season in Malaysia, began on Nov 5 and will last until March 2025. It is expected to bring five to seven episodes of heavy rainfall in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah. Commenting further, Ahmad Nazif said nearly 80 per cent of the 455 KRTs in Kelantan are active in organising various programmes and activities, including arts, culture, and community safety. As for inactive KRTs, these are typically older organisations. If they remain inactive, our officers will discuss with the village head (Tok Penghulu) to identify suitable individuals to appoint as KRT committee members within a two-year period, he said. |

The event, organised by the mission in collaboration with the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC), was aimed at promoting Malaysia as a travel destination for Namibians, a statement from the High Commission said. Acting High Commissioner Datuk Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya in .. his welcoming remarks highlighted Malaysias position as a leading destination for healthcare, gaining significant international recognition in recent years, including the Medical Travel destination of the Year by the UK-based international Medical Travel Journal. Compared with places like New York and the United Kingdom, he said the cost of living and medical healthcare in Malaysia are not only more affordable, it also provides access to world-class healthcare, making it an ideal spot for Namibians seeking medical treatment and leisure. He noted that as of 2023, Malaysia had welcomed about 70 health travellers from Namibia, with gastroenterology being the most sought-after treatment. He also highlighted the 90-day visa-on-arrival policy for Namibians, describing it as a key advantage for visitors. More Namibians should seek good and affordable healthcare in Malaysia while their families can enjoy their holidays in Malaysia a symbiosis between both health and tourism sectors, he said. Additionally, he said Malaysia has received more than 23,000 health travellers from the African continent. During the engagement session, Rameez assured that Malaysia offers seamless healthcare access and emphasised its readiness to explore collaborative opportunities. |
National Cloud Computing Policy to be finalised by year end - Ministry of .. - SUN - 21/11 7:46 am KUALA LUMPUR: The National Cloud Computing Policy is expected to be finalised by the end of this year, according to the Ministry of Digital. In addition, the ministry said the National Digital Department is revising the cloud framework agreement, which is part of the ministrys ongoing efforts to improve policies related to cloud computing. The establishment of new data centres and cloud services can support and drive the digitalisation of government services and further improve the efficiency .. of government service delivery, said the ministry in a written response published on the Parliament website yesterday. The ministry was replying to a question posed by Ahmad Fakhruddin Fakhrurazi (PN-Kuala Kedah) about its plans to develop Malaysias downstream economy after receiving high investment in the digital sector, especially in the development of data centres. According to the ministry, Malaysias fast-growing data centre industry supports the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) by providing the basic infrastructure for AI. It said that until August 2024, more than five AI-ready hyperscalers have been developed across the country. The availability of AI-ready basic infrastructure will attract more high-value investments from global technology companies into the country, it said. The Ministry of Digital has also identified 200 potential local companies as AI technology service providers in line with the governments efforts to make Malaysia a generative AI hub under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030. |
Hajiji calls for grassroots support to address poverty in Sabah - SUN - 21/11 7:43 am KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has called on elected representatives, district officers and grassroots leaders to report cases of poverty and hardcore poverty to the Sabah government through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) secretariat. He also announced plans for an engagement session with non-government assemblymen on Nov 28 to gather comprehensive data on affected households. I have directed the SMJ Secretariat to organise this session to refine the list of identified Heads of .. Households (KIR) and Household Members (AIR) eligible for aid in their respective areas. This effort is crucial to ensure no one is left behind in the hardcore poverty eradication programme in Sabah. I believe the actual numbers of poor and hardcore poor households are higher than those previously reported, Hajiji said when winding up the debate on the 2025 Sabah Supply Bill yesterday. Yesterday, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said as of September, Sabah recorded 3,978 hardcore poor households and 68,089 poor households. During the debate, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (Warisan-Senallang) suggested that poverty classification in Sabah should consider entire households rather than focusing solely on KIR data. In Sabah, a single house often accommodates three or four families. If the KIR is categorised as hardcore poor, surely the other families in the same house should be classified similarly. Relying only on KIR data can be misleading. Lets also recognise that eight of the 10 poorest districts in Malaysia are in Sabah, he said. Hajiji agreed, highlighting the importance of accurate information from grassroots leaders to address the issue effectively. This is why its essential to channel data to the SMJ secretariat. Poverty and extreme poverty remain widespread, and we must work together to free our people from these hardships. Collaboration is key, Hajiji said. |

Archegos Bill Hwang sentenced to 18 years in prison for massive US fraud - SUN - 21/11 7:39 am NEW YORK : Former billionaire investor Sung Kook Bill Hwang was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday over the collapse of Archegos Capital Management, which cost Wall Street banks more than $10 billion. Hwang was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan, where a jury convicted Hwang in July on 10 criminal charges including wire fraud, securities fraud and market manipulation. The amount of losses that were caused by your conduct are larger than any other losses I .. have dealt with, Hellerstein said before announcing the sentence. Archegos March 2021 implosion took less than a week, stunning Wall Street and Hwangs lenders. The U.S. Attorneys office in Manhattan sought a 21-year prison term for Hwang - unusually long for a white-collar case - and for him to forfeit $12.35 billion and make restitution to victims. It stands among a rare class of cases that truly could be described as a national calamity, prosecutor Andrew Thomas said at the sentencing hearing before Hellerstein. Hellerstein did not reach a decision on Wednesday on whether Hwang must forfeit money or pay restitution. The sentencing hearing is expected to resume on Thursday. Before sentencing Hwang, Hellerstein asked the defendants lawyer, Dani James, how she thought Hwang compared to Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced in March to 25 years in prison for stealing $8 billion from users of the now-bankrupt FTX exchange. Mr. Bankman-Fried was literally stealing from his customers, James said. I dont think thats whats happened here. Hwang had asked for no prison, forfeiture or restitution, and to remain free on bail while he appealed his conviction. James said his low risk of committing more crimes meant a lengthy prison term served no purpose. The notion that he would commit a crime in the future, its just not so, James said. Bankman-Fried denies wrongdoing and is appealing his conviction. STARTED AS FAMILY OFFICE Hwang, 60, was a protg of late hedge-fund billionaire Julian Robertson. He set up Archegos in New York as a family office in 2013, the year after his former hedge fund Tiger Asia Management pleaded guilty to wire fraud in an insider-trading case. Prosecutors accused Hwang of lying to banks about Archegos portfolio so he could borrow money aggressively and make concentrated bets on media and technology stocks such as ViacomCBS, now called Paramount Global. While Archegos eventually managed $36 billion, Hwangs borrowing helped him amass $160 billion of exposure to stocks. His downfall occurred when Hwang was unable to meet margin calls, as the prices of some of his favorite stocks began falling and various banks unloaded stocks that had backed his so-called total return swaps. More than $100 billion of market value in Hwangs stocks was wiped out. Several banks suffered losses, including Credit Suisse, which lost $5.5 billion, and Nomura Holdings. Credit Suisse is now part of UBS. Hwangs lawyers request for no punishment also cited Hwangs Christian faith and his nonprofit Grace and Mercy Foundation, which has since 2006 donated at least $600 million to combat homelessness, poverty and human trafficking, among other causes. In a statement to the court before Hellerstein announced the sentence, Hwang said he hoped the punishment would allow me to serve as much as I can given the circumstances. Hwangs lawyers have said his net worth has fallen to at most $55.3 million. Hwangs co-defendant, former Archegos Chief Financial Officer Patrick Halligan, was convicted at the same trial on three criminal charges. His sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 27. Both chose not to testify at their two-month trial. |
US shuts Kyiv embassy citing strike threat after Ukraine fires ATACMS at .. - SUN - 21/11 7:36 am KYIV: The United States shut its embassy in Kyiv on Wednesday morning due to what it called the threat of a significant air attack, a day after Ukraine used American missiles to hit a target inside Russia in what Moscow described as an escalation in the war. Later, after an air raid siren in the early afternoon jangled nerves in the capital, Ukraine's military spy agency said Russia was trying to sow panic by circulating fake online messages about a massive looming missile and drone attack. The .. enemy, unable to subdue Ukrainians by force, resorts to measures of intimidation and psychological pressure on society. We ask you to be vigilant and steadfast, it said. A U.S. government source said the embassy closure was related to ongoing threats of air attacks. The Italian and Greek embassies said they too had closed their doors. The French embassy remained open but urged its citizens to be cautious. The U.S. State Department later said it expected the Kyiv embassy to resume normal operations on Thursday. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said that panic-inducing messages circulated today only help Russia, but warned Ukrainians to pay close attention to air raid alerts. However many brutal and treacherous attacks by Russia we have endured... it is always important to pay attention to air raid warnings, he said in his nightly video address. We have a neighbour that is insane. Zelenskiy also expressed thanks for a new $275 million U.S. military aid package announced by the State Department focusing on ammunition, drones and missiles. Ukraine on Tuesday used U.S. ATACMS missiles to attack an arms depot inside Russia, making use of newly granted permission from the outgoing administration of U.S. President Joe Biden on the 1,000th day of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Russia has been signalling to the United States and its allies for weeks that if they give permission to Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory with Western-supplied missiles then Moscow will consider it a major escalation. Out of an abundance of caution, the embassy will be closed, and embassy employees are being instructed to shelter in place, the U.S. Department of State Consular Affairs said in a statement on the embassy's website. The U.S. Embassy recommends U.S. citizens be prepared to immediately shelter in the event an air alert is announced. The Kremlin said it had no comment. Russian foreign intelligence chief Sergei Naryshkin said in an interview published on Wednesday that Moscow would retaliate against NATO countries that facilitate long-range Ukrainian missile strikes against Russian territory. PSYCHOLOGICAL OPERATION In the early afternoon, the Ukrainian air force told people to seek shelter because of a missile threat. Senior officials told people not to ignore the alert. That came shortly before Kyiv's top military spy agency GUR issued a warning about a Russian psychological operation it said involved fake messages claiming to have been sent by the agency. A message is being spread via messengers and social networks ... about the threat of a 'particularly massive' missile and bomb strike on Ukrainian cities today, GUR said in a statement. Two Ukrainian military personnel told Reuters they received messages informing them that Russia would launch more than 300 drones and also use warships, warplanes and ground-based systems to fire missiles in a huge salvo. Reuters could not immediately determine how the messages were sent. One soldier said he received one from a friend. The war is at a volatile juncture, with nearly a fifth of Ukrainian territory in Russian hands, North Korean troops deployed in Russia's Kursk region and doubts over future aid as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House. On Sunday, Russia staged a massive missile and drone strike on Ukraine's national power grid that killed seven people and renewed fears over the durability of the hobbled energy network. The GUR spy agency said earlier that a Russian military command post had been successfully struck in the town of Gubkin in Russia's Belgorod region, around 168 km (105 miles) from the border with Ukraine. The statement did not specify who carried out the attack, when it took place or the type of weapon used. Ukraine has also used drones for deep strikes against targets in Russia. Bloomberg later cited a Western official as saying Ukraine had fired UK Storm Shadow missiles into Russia. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his office would not be commenting on reports or operational matters. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. 'PERSISTENT RUSSIAN ATTACKS' The embassy in Kyiv urged U.S. citizens in Ukraine to have reserves of water, food and other essentials such as required medications for the event of a possible temporary loss of electricity and water caused by Russian strikes. Persistent Russian attacks targeting civilian infrastructure throughout Ukraine may result in power outages, loss of heating, and disruption of municipal services, it said. On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin lowered the threshold for a nuclear strike in response to a broader range of conventional attacks. Washington said afterwards it had not seen any reason to adjust its nuclear posture. Commenting on the U.S. embassy warning about an attack, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Ukrainian Security Council's Centre for Countering Disinformation, said Russia was ready to conduct more conventional missile strikes. |
Migrant gets life sentence for Laken Riley murder highlighted by Trump - SUN - 21/11 7:34 am A Venezuelan migrant was convicted on Wednesday and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student whose killing became a rallying cry for U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as he attacked illegal immigration during the campaign. Jose Ibarra, 26, who entered the U.S. illegally, was found guilty on murder and other charges by Judge Patrick Haggard in Athens-Clarke County Superior Court. As the judge read the verdict aloud, Rileys .. family members and friends sobbed while Ibarra sat stony-faced. Haggard heard the evidence and rendered the verdict after Ibarra waived his right to a jury trial. Trump and other Republicans often cited Rileys murder in claiming falsely that migrants who crossed the southern border illegally were responsible for a wave of violent crime, part of the president-elects argument for stricter border policies and aggressive deportations. JUSTICE FOR LAKEN RILEY! The Illegal who killed our beloved Laken Riley was just found GUILTY on all counts for his horrific crimes, Trump wrote on his social media site Truth Social. Prosecutors said Ibarra encountered Riley, 22, on a wooded trail while she was out running on Feb. 22 and killed her after she resisted his efforts to rape her. She was a nursing student at Augusta University in Athens. In victim impact statements delivered in court ahead of the sentencing, Rileys family and friends described her as a caring, selfless and devout person who loved running and was committed to serving others. Laken had a beautiful and bright future, her mother, Allyson Phillips, told the court. She was smart, hardworking, kind, thoughtful, and most importantly, she was a child of God. In her closing statement earlier on Wednesday, prosecutor Sheila Ross called the evidence against Ibarra overwhelming, including DNA under her fingernails that authorities linked to the defendant, scratches on Ibarras body and video footage of a man matching Ibarras description throwing a bloodied jacket into a dumpster soon after the murder. Defense attorneys argued that the evidence was circumstantial and could not rule out another attacker. Rileys case made national headlines in March during President Joe Bidens State of the Union address, when firebrand U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene interrupted his speech to demand that he say her name. Biden went off-script to mention Riley, whom he described as an innocent woman killed by an illegal. Republicans criticized him for appearing to mispronounce Rileys first name, while Biden later apologized for using the word illegal to refer to a person. Biden, then the Democratic nominee for president, dropped out of the race in July and was replaced by Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost earlier this month to Trump. Trump has vowed to pursue mass deportations of immigrants after he is sworn into office in January. |
Child marriage: a persistent knot in Malaysia - SUN - 21/11 7:31 am WITH the theme Listen to the Future, this years World Childrens Day reminds us to listen to the troubles and needs of the future generation. The to-do list is long, but one issue depriving some of our children of childhood continues to be tolerated: child marriage. Prevalence of issue Statistics on child marriage in Malaysia are not regularly published but time-series statistics show a declining trend. My calculations based on publicly available census data show that the percentage of children .. aged 10 to 17 married, divorced or widowed was just below 1% in 2000, a decline from about 4% in 1970. More recently, 1,124 child marriages were recorded in Malaysia in 2020. Assuming that in these marriages both parties were children aged at least 10, this would mean just 0.04% of children and adolescents aged 10 to 19 were married in 2020. While this figure is a rough estimate due to various assumptions, it highlights that, statistically, child marriage remains a relatively rare phenomenon. However, for children who tie the knot, the ramifications of marriage during these pivotal developmental years cannot be underestimated. Effects on children According to Girls Not Brides, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), children who marry have significant physical and mental health consequences. Girls who marry before the age of 15 are 50% more likely to suffer from intimate partner violence than those who marry later, and pregnancy complications are the leading cause of death among girls aged 15-19. Child marriage often results in children dropping out of school and never returning. Real-life cases highlight the troubling acceptance of child marriage in Malaysia. In 2018, an 11-year-old girl married a 41-year-old man in Kelantan. The man had stated, One day I will take this girl as my wife, four years before the marriage took place raising concerns of sexual grooming. This means he intended to marry her when she was only seven years old. In some cases, children are even married off to their rapists. For example, in 2 , a 13-year-old girl was married to her 19-year-old rapist in Kulim, Kedah. These cases are not isolated, and reflect systemic issues perpetuated by societal and legal shortcomings. Policies and laws In 2020, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry launched the National Strategy Plan in Handling the Causes of Child Marriage . The plan takes a comprehensive approach in tackling child marriage, addressing issues such as poverty, improving access to education, and expanding sexual and reproductive health services. Additionally, the plan also includes a proposal to raise the minimum marriage age to 18 for all individuals. Unfortunately, the government falls short of meeting this goal. In Malaysia, family law is contingent on a persons religion and state of residence. For Muslims, Islamic family law stipulates the minimum marriage age for girls at 16 and boys at 18. However, by 2022, Selangor and Kedah had amended their state laws to raise the minimum age for girls to 18. Discouragingly in 2022, the then minister of Women, Family and Community Development announced that the federal government had no plans to pursue a nationwide ban on child marriage, citing resistance from many states to amend their laws. Resistance to reforms Despite the relatively low number of child marriages each year, it is surprising that some states are slow or even reluctant to make changes. One possible explanation is that the low prevalence of child marriage makes proposing legal amendments a low priority in state legislative assemblies. However, a more compelling reason may lie in resistance from those in power. In the past, bureaucrats in states like Sabah, Terengganu and Kelantan have opposed marriage reforms, arguing that the legality of child marriage is necessary in exceptional circumstances such as to protect a childs dignity from premarital sex, whether consensual or not. Lack of political will and consensus There appears to be a lack of political will, and without the consensus of legislators and state authorities, protecting children from a deprived childhood will remain unachieved. While Selangor and Kedah have amended their laws, loopholes persist as long as children can still be married in other states. Malaysia now lags behind its regional neighbours, as countries like Indonesia and the Philippines have passed laws recognising the human rights violations associated with child marriage. Thailand raised its minimum marriage age to 17 back in 2018. The Madani government must push through in meeting the objectives of the National Strategy Plan in Handling the Causes of Child Marriage. With the support of community leaders and NGO, it must continue to have dialogues with state governments to ensure child abuse is not concealed behind the veil of a child bride. Living life with purpose and intensity - SUN - 21/11 7:27 am WHO is Memento Mori truly for the ones left reeling from the sudden loss of a loved one or those standing at the precipice of their mortality? The answer is both. It is for those who mourn, stunned by the abrupt fragility of life, and for those who still walk this earth, wondering how to make the most of the time they have. It is a philosophy that bridges the living and the dead, a timeless reminder that life is precious and impermanent. Life is a tapestry of delicate threads, each moment .. vibrant yet fragile, vulnerable to fates unpredictability. When the thread is cut, grief often overwhelms those left behind, filling the air with unanswered questions and disbelief. Yet, in the stillness of sorrow, loved ones find solace in memories laughter shared, passions pursued and love freely given. These moments, once ordinary, become extraordinary reminders that even a fleeting life can be lived with purpose and intensity. Central to Memento Mori is the beautiful art of letting go not of life itself, but of the burdens that prevent us from living fully. Letting go is not about giving up; it is about releasing the things that weigh us down, embracing the present and facing the future with clarity and courage. Letting go of ego: Our egos cling to the need for recognition, validation and control. Memento Mori invites us to loosen that grip, encouraging joy in the success of others and freedom from constant comparison. True worth is not found in accolades or possessions but in the inherent value of being human. Letting go of the illusion of control: Lifes unpredictability can be daunting and beautiful. Surrendering to the flow of life allows us to embrace its uncertainties with grace, seeing challenges as opportunities for growth and resilience. Letting go of the past: Regrets and resentments are anchors that keep us tethered to what can no longer be changed. By forgiving ourselves and others, we can transform the past into a source of wisdom rather than a burden. Letting go of material attachments: In a world consumed by consumerism, Memento Mori reminds us that happiness is not in possessions but in experiences, relationships and acts of kindness. Material things fade but the legacy of love and compassion endures. Letting go of the fear of death: Death, as natural as birth, is not an end to dread but a truth to embrace. Confronting mortality frees us from fear, enabling us to live with greater presence and gratitude. This practice of letting go clears the path for a life lived intentionally, unburdened by regret or fear, and open to the fullness of each fleeting moment. It is about cultivating simple, conscious habits that bring clarity and intention to everyday living. Daily reflection: Begin or end each day with quiet contemplation. Ask yourself: If today were my last, would I be content with how I lived it? Let this guide your choices. Confront your fears: Identify what you have been avoiding a dream deferred, a difficult conversation or a leap of faith and take action. Courage is the antidote for regret. Practice gratitude: Notice lifes small blessings, from the beauty of nature to acts of kindness. Gratitude shifts focus from what is missing to what is present. Connect with nature: Spend time outdoors, observing lifes cycles of renewal and decay. The changing seasons, blooming flowers and falling leaves remind us of impermanence. Create a legacy: Reflect on how you want to be remembered. It is not about grand achievements but the love, kindness and positive impact you leave behind. Live intentionally: Infuse meaning into daily actions. Whether eating, working or connecting with loved ones, presence transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Memento Mori teaches us that lifes beauty lies in its impermanence. For the grieving, it offers solace in memories and a reminder that a well-lived life, though brief, is profound. Port Klang in urgent need of revitalisation - SUN - 21/11 7:19 am PORT Klang, located on the west coast of Malaysia, is a key player in the global shipping industry, serving as the nations busiest port, and soon to be announced as the tenth busiest port in the world. Despite its importance to Malaysias economy and the world shipping industry, Port Klang remains largely underdeveloped as a port town, and has not reached its full potential as a destination for trade and tourism. To position Port Klang as a true port town in terms of economic vitality and .. cultural appeal or as a tourist attraction, a thorough transformation is needed. There are several examples of port towns around the world that have successfully integrated their maritime heritage with tourism and local development. Cities like Singapore, Rotterdam, Hong Kong and Amsterdam serve as prime examples of how port towns can balance bustling commercial activities with cultural vibrancy, environmental sustainability and an attractive urban landscape. Singapore, known for its state-of-the-art port facilities, has managed to blend its maritime industry with tourism, creating a global hub that attracts millions of visitors annually. The Marina Bay Sands, the Singapore Flyer and the Gardens by the Bay show how a port can coexist with tourism and green spaces. Rotterdam in the Netherlands has striking modern aesthetic and sustainable development practices. It is a port town known for its museums, architecture and thriving cultural scene, proving that a working port and urban regeneration can go hand in hand. Hong Kong is a major international shipping hub that also boasts a vibrant tourism industry. The Victoria Harbour, along with tourist attractions like the Star Ferry, brings together the essence of maritime heritage with modernity. Amsterdam, with its canals and historical port district, has capitalised on its maritime past by offering tourists a chance to explore the rich heritage of its waterways while also embracing innovation and sustainable urban design. Assessing current state of Port Klang Port Klang today presents a stark contrast to these global port towns. Its infrastructure and urban planning remain underdeveloped, characterised by a disorganised mix of industrial sites, neglected public spaces, poor signage, litter-filled corners and uninviting streets. For visitors and tourists, Port Klang feels like an afterthought or the backwaters of Klang. It is a town that, despite its massive economic potential, offers little to inspire visitors or residents alike. Poor infrastructure: The roads around Port Klang are often congested, poorly maintained and lack pedestrian-friendly features. Drains and basic utilities are either outdated or neglected, detracting from the towns overall image. Stray dogs and haphazard parking are common too. Industrial sprawl: The port area is surrounded by warehouses, cargo facilities and industrial zones, many of which have little to no aesthetic appeal or accessibility for tourists. Lack of tourism infrastructure: Aside from a few basic eateries and local shops, there are only a few attractions that would draw tourists, and those that do exist such as the Sri Murugan Temple or the Port Klang Heritage Walk are often overlooked or poorly maintained. Foreign labour and informal businesses: While foreign workers contribute to the economy, the visible presence of informal businesses and lack of regulation can often create an unpleasant atmosphere for locals and visitors. Lack of rest areas: Large tanker trucks have no proper parking bays or restroom facilities for drivers to rest and refresh themselves after long hours of driving from north to south, transporting goods from the port. Vision for the future To elevate Port Klang into a port town that not only serves as a critical node in global trade, but also attracts tourists and locals alike, several key actions need to be taken: Revitalise infrastructure The towns infrastructure is in dire need of a makeover. Widening and modernising roads, improving drainage systems and creating pedestrian-friendly walkways will provide a foundation for sustainable growth. Port Klang could adopt the best practices from other port cities by integrating smart city technologies that allow for better traffic management, environmental monitoring and citizen engagement. Embrace sustainable urban planning Port Klang can take inspiration from cities like Rotterdam and Singapore by emphasising green spaces, eco-friendly buildings and sustainable designs. Developing parks along the waterfront, along with bike lanes and pedestrian zones, will attract residents and tourists to explore the area, while reducing the environmental impact of the port. Leverage port heritage Port Klangs maritime history can be a key selling point. A dedicated maritime museum or a heritage centre could educate visitors about Malaysias role in global trade and the history of Port Klang itself. Incorporating interactive exhibits, educational programmes and a waterfront promenade could draw tourists interested in maritime culture. This can be complemented by historical walking tours or boat rides along the coast to showcase the bustling port in action. Develop tourism-oriented attractions Port Klangs lack of attractions is a significant barrier to tourism. The town could boost its appeal by developing new attractions such as waterfront dining areas, cultural festivals and craft markets. Creating a marina area for recreational boats and yachts could also lure affluent tourists while adding vibrancy to the towns waterfront. Events like seafood festivals, port-side art fairs and cultural exhibitions could be used to draw in crowds throughout the year. Improve public amenities and landscape The aesthetic appearance of Port Klang needs urgent attention. Make it mandatory for traders to paint their shops, especially the old structures, spruce up the image of the shops. Improve road signage, clean up streets, create beautiful public spaces and establish well-maintained parks to give the town a new look and feel. Making the area more visually appealing, with integrated green spaces and vibrant street art, can help foster a sense of pride and attract tourists. For example, Juan Miguel Pozo from Spain contributed by painting a large-scale mural on the shop wall at the Jalan Kem traffic light. Create strong local economy While the port is the economic backbone, the surrounding area should be developed with a focus on small businesses, local eateries and artisanal markets to create a more diverse and welcoming atmosphere. Encouraging the development of businesses that cater to tourists and locals will enhance the towns cultural landscape. Engage local community and workforce Port Klang should take steps to ensure that the foreign labour population and informal business activities do not detract from the towns appeal. Community engagement and empowerment programmes aimed at improving standards of living for the foreign workforce can help integrate them into the broader community. Collaboration between local businesses and foreign workers can also lead to better-regulated informal economies and enhance cultural exchange. Port Klang has the potential to be more than just a bustling industrial hub. By drawing inspiration from global port towns, it can become a dynamic fusion of maritime industry, cultural heritage and tourism. With improved infrastructure, sustainable urban planning and an emphasis on tourism development, Port Klang can be a port town that attracts ships and tourists creating a unique space where commerce and culture converge. The Port Klang Ferry Terminal could be an absolute gem, a thriving hub for eager tourists. If Port Klang offered even a small gesture of hospitality to weary travellers, visitors would not simply drive past the town without a second glance. It is almost remarkable how the Transport Ministry, Klang City Council, and the Selangor state government have overlooked the golden opportunity that Port Klang represents. It is time they seize the full potential of this port. Comments: letters@thesundaily.com |
Adopting Goldilocks range in AI use - SUN - 21/11 7:13 am SHAH ALAM: Artificial intelligence (AI) is steadily revolutionising the media landscape in Malaysia and around the world, offering journalists new tools to enhance efficiency and improve news quality. However, experts stress the need for balance, emphasising that while AI presents undeniable advantages, it also raises challenges that must be carefully managed. Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam head of Communication and Knowledge Advancement and senior lecturer Dr Wan Hartini Wan .. Zainodin said AI could significantly strengthen news production. Time is precious in journalism, and delivering accurate news promptly is crucial. AI helps accelerate the process of gathering information and writing tasks, allowing journalists to focus on creating high-quality content. She said AI is a powerful tool that enhances creativity when used correctly for activities like transcribing interviews, analysing audience engagement and fact-checking, adding that with it, journalists would have more time to focus on investigative stories and in-depth reporting. Wan Hartini also said AI is a valuable asset in video editing, translating content into different languages and adding subtitles, making news more accessible to a wider audience. However, she stressed that media organisations must provide proper training and work closely with universities to ensure journalists are equipped to adapt to this evolving technology. Reskilling and upskilling are essential to maintaining a balance between AI and human effort, she said. Meanwhile, UiTM journalism lecturer Fadzillah Aishah Ismail said the challenges AI brings to journalism include ethical risks. Transparency is key and journalists must adhere to ethical principles, double-check facts, and ensure objective reporting to maintain trust and credibility. She said AI could potentially contribute to misinformation if not used responsibly, such as in terms of bias, plagiarism and privacy violations that could occur if journalists fail to uphold ethical standards. AI is a tool, not a replacement for journalistic integrity, she said. According to her, AI lacks the emotional intelligence and cultural understanding needed for storytelling, especially in a diverse country like Malaysia. She also said AI cannot replicate the human touch that makes stories meaningful as empathy and cultural sensitivity are irreplaceable in crafting narratives that resonate with audiences. Fadzillah added that universities play a big role in preparing future journalists for an AI-driven industry. At UiTM, students are encouraged to use AI responsibly, with an emphasis on critical thinking and ethical practices, she said, and stressed that while AI can be useful for brainstorming ideas, students must create their own content. They are taught to balance AI tools with hard work and dedication to ensure authenticity in their reporting. While both experts agree that AI is reshaping journalism, they emphasised the importance of maintaining a balance between technological advancements and human creativity. AI is here to stay, but it is not a miracle cure. Journalists must embrace their evolving roles and ensure integrity remains at the heart of newsroom culture, Fadzillah said. She added that AI can assist, but it cannot replace the human touch. Journalism is about connecting with people, and that connection relies on empathy, authenticity and cultural understanding. |

I came .. to see the current situation following the (landslide) incident on Oct 23. I understand that this is a vegetable farming area, so I appeal for everyones patience as these works must be properly completed. If not, the road will remain unsafe and pose risks to lives, he said in response to complaints from vegetable farmers regarding the road closure. On Oct 23 at 8 am, the Kinta District JKR received a report of a landslide at the federal route. The estimated height of the landslide was 70 metres, with a width of 100 metres. |
Chukai at risk of flooding, up to 15,000 residents will be affected - Cops - SUN - 20/11 10:29 pm CHUKAI : Terengganu police are anticipating that up to 15,000 residents in Chukai, Kemaman, will be affected by floods if heavy rainfall continues. Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin, however, assured that 82 temporary relief centres in the Kemaman district that can accommodate up to 40,000 evacuees are ready to be activated at any time. That is the estimated number of victims due to heavy rainfall and rising sea levels. Based on the continuous heavy rain forecast by the .. Malaysian Meteorological Department, we expect flooding to occur again in Chukai if the rainfall intensity is similar to yesterdays. However, with the number of relief centres available, I believe there should be no issues. InsyaAllah, it will be under control, but the important thing is that they must evacuate to the relief centres, he told reporters during a visit to the flood-hit Rumah Mampu Milik Telok Kalong housing area today. Mohd Khairi added that Terengganus flood situation is under control, with only two districtsKemaman and Marangremaining affected as of this afternoon. Terengganu State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said 2,545 people from 637 families are taking shelter in six relief centres, with Kemaman recording the highest number of evacuees at 2,532, adding that Marang has only 13 remaining evacuees. |
KLIA 1 altercation: AeroDarat worker suspended from duty - SUN - 20/11 10:27 pm KUALA LUMPUR : An AeroDarat Services (ADS) staff member, who allegedly mistreated a passenger issued with a Not to Land (NTL) notice at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA1), has been given a show-cause letter and suspended from duty, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He said that the decision was made to allow ADS, the ground handling service provider, to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. It is understood that the staff member involved in the incident is .. from AeroDarat Services, not Malaysia Airport Holding Berhad (MAHB). The staff claimed to have been provoked by the passenger issued with the NTL. The situation led to physical contact and verbal exchanges. Whatever the situation is, we cannot defend the staffs action, he told a press conference at the Parliament building today. A 25-second video of the incident, showing a fight between two individuals at KLIA 1, recently went viral, prompting police to investigate under Section 323 of the Penal Code. Loke said that the staff must remain professional in any situation, even when confronted by rude passengers. He added that, according to established procedure, managing any NTL passenger falls under the responsibility of the airline, not the Immigration Department or MAHB. It is an international standard, applied at all international airports. In this case, MAHB has provided a room for the NTL passenger to wait for his return flight, he said. NTL notices are issued to passengers for various reasons, including having a blacklist record or failing to provide necessary documents, such as a visa, return flight ticket, or hotel accommodation, as required by immigration regulations. |
