Empat cabaran menanti Presiden FAM baharu - Sinarharian - 17/09 7:10 am

Keretapi Sarong 2026 brings Malaysians together in traditional attire - Sinardaily - 16/09 6:12 pm

KUALA LUMPUR - The Keretapi Sarong 2026 (KS26) programme held nationwide today drew tens of thousands of Malaysians dressed in traditional attire, strengthening local cultural heritage and fostering unity in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebrations. In KUALA LUMPUR, the 10th edition of KS26, centred at Raintree Plaza, TRX, saw a vibrant gathering of around 25,000 participants.LOCCO co-founder Shamsul Bahrin Zainuzzaman said after a decade, the programme had evolved into a platform for community unity and was no longer merely an event involving people travelling on public transport dressed in sarongs. One of this years new initiatives was the Womens Station at Titiwangsa MRT station, providing a more comfortable and inclusive space for women."Many have said that they would like to join, but they are a little introverted and less comfortable in very large crowds. So, we thought about how we could provide a space for these women to create, contribute and celebrate Malaysia Day together, he said.He said the community-based approach was also celebrated through Joget Sarong on the main stage as a token of appreciation to all sarong wearers after a decade of celebrating Malaysia Day together. The event in the capital was made even more memorable by the surprise appearance of Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin and live performances by Aina Abdul and Didie Shazry. In PENANG, more than 15,000 visitors thronged the Penang Ferry Museum grounds to take part in Keretapi Sarong George Town 2026.Penang Ferry Museum director Abdul Hadi Abu Osman said the programme, held from 8 am to 11 pm, brought together people of various races dressed elegantly in traditional attire such as kebaya, cheongsam, hanfu, sari, as well as ethnic costumes from Sabah and Sarawak."The programme provides an excellent platform for people to come together and celebrate the spirit of Malaysia Day in an atmosphere of goodwill and harmony, he said.In KELANTAN, more than 500 participants boarded Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) train at the Tanah Merah, Pasir Mas and Tumpat stations to take part in the Pasar Che Siti x Keretapi Sarong 2026 programme.Kotak Seni marketing and communications officer Lupin, 29, said participants this year came dressed in bolder styles with vibrant touches of colour while retaining the concept of wearing sarongs."The fourth edition in Kelantan this year was livelier, with more than 2,000 visitors, and featured cultural performances including mak yong."The programme, which runs until Sept 19, also has sales booths offering various handicrafts, food and souvenirs for visitors, she said, adding that the programme was attended by people of various races in Kelantan, including the Indian, Chinese and Siamese minorities. In MELAKA, about 3,000 participants from various communities, including the Baba Nyonya, Chetti and Portuguese communities, gathered as early as 7 am at Muzium Istana Kesultanan Melayu Melaka before embarking on a two-kilometre procession through A Famosa, ending at Menara Taming Sari.Various activities were held in conjunction with the programme, including cultural performances, the Jalur Gemilang creative attire competition, joget lambak, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme with an environmental club, as well as a special performance by ethnic pop music singer Noraniza Idris. In PERAK, the fifth edition of KS26 organised by Ipoh Social Club brought together about 2,000 participants at the Ipoh Railway Station.Ipoh Social Club founder Deena Erissa Delaila Mohd Zawawi said the programme began with joget lambak and traditional games before participants were taken to visit historical sites around Ipoh Old Town."Participants were taken to several interesting locations around Ipoh Old Town, including Arlene House Museum, Ho Yan Hor Museum and Hourglass Coffee, she said

How to avoid getting trapped by property rental scams in Malaysia - Sinardaily - 16/09 5:00 pm

Don't ignore unsafe or suspicious accommodationNot every rental scam involves a property that does not exist.Ishak said consumers also needed to be cautious about accommodation that was real but unsafe or unsuitable, including spaces converted into extremely small rooms or cubicles. He said room rentals were allowed but had to comply with relevant guidelines under the Town and Country Planning Act and local authority requirements.Estate agents and professional property managers also have responsibilities to ensure that accommodation is suitable for occupation.7. Remember the ACE rule: Ask, check, enforceLim said BOVAEP's public awareness campaign this year was built around a simple ACE formula:A Ask for the agent's Ren tag.C Check the Ren details using the QR code and verify who you are dealing with.E Enforce by reporting suspicious or illegal activity to the relevant authorities.Lim said consumers who fell victim to scams should make a police report, while BOVAEP also has mechanisms to receive reports involving its regulated practitioners. He said the number of scams could be difficult to determine because many victims did not report their cases. Why students need to be especially carefulIshak said students were particularly vulnerable because many had to find accommodation outside university campuses due to limited on-campus housing.Ishak said some students, particularly those from rural areas or less wealthy families, could struggle to recover financially after losing thousands of ringgit in rental deposits."They may even have to borrow money just to register at university," he said.He urged universities, government agencies, local authorities, estate agents and industry bodies to work together to improve access to safe accommodation.Ultimately, the safest approach is simple: verify first, pay later.

Safe at home, safe online? - Sinardaily - 16/09 8:30 am

The greatest risks often come from who they interact with, not where they are physically," he said.Meanwhile, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Centre for Cyber Security analyst Dr Umi Asma' Mokhtar said modern independence requires national ownership of knowledge, data and technology. In a borderless digital world, true independence means our knowledge, data and technology are ours as surely as our territory once wasbuilt by us, governed by us and answerable to Malaysian values, she told Sinar Daily. She said Malaysia has strengthened its cyber defence through the National Cyber Security Agency, Cyber Security Act 2024 and Malaysia Cyber Security Strategy 20252030.She also highlighted the Online Safety Act 2025 (ONSA), which holds large platforms accountable to Malaysian regulators. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) introduced regulatory measures under ONSA, effective Jan 1, alongside the Child Protection Code and Risk Mitigation Code on June 1.Under ONSA, MCMC can impose civil penalties of up to RM10 million on licensed service providers that fail their safety duties, while criminal failures carry fines of up to RM1 million. The Act also extends liability to corporate directors and compliance officers unless they can prove they took reasonable steps to prevent an offence."Without these measures, we would rely entirely on the goodwill of foreign corporations whose business models reward engagement, not safety, leaving children exposed to grooming, scams and harmful content with no accountability," Umi said. She said the Child Protection Code's child safety-by-design approach was important, as it requires platforms to protect children by default.Setting minors' accounts to the highest privacy level and blocking messages from unknown adults directly closes the easiest doors a predator uses to make first contact," she added. However, technology cannot eliminate every threat.Automated filters and AI can remove flagged content, but harmful posts can still slip through, while algorithms may struggle with local slang, grooming tactics and private messaging.Umi said technical safeguards must therefore be combined with psychological and community support. She said online safety is a shared responsibility involving parents, schools, civil society and community leaders.Parents build trust at home by staying curious about their child's digital life rather than only policing it. Schools embed digital literacy into everyday learning, civil society reaches underserved families and community leaders normalise these conversations so seeking help carries no shame."Physical safety and online safety are not the same thing

New Muslims Community teams up with Siiru, sponsors Umrah for five deserving reverts - Sinardaily - 15/09 4:52 pm

KUALA LUMPUR The New Muslims Community (NMC) will sponsor five new Muslims to perform Umrah as part of its ongoing efforts to support reverts and recognise those who actively contribute to the Muslim community. The RM47,500 sponsorship, announced during the NMC Community Conference 2026 themed Bridging the Nation, Healing the Divide at a hotel here on Sunday will provide each recipient with an Umrah package worth RM9,500.The five recipients will be selected by NMC based on three main considerations, their consistent volunteer service, commitment to supporting other new Muslims and financial circumstances that may otherwise make Umrah difficult for them to afford.Their readiness and ability to undertake the journey will also be taken into consideration. The sponsorship is a direct collaboration between NMC under the Al-Khaadem Foundation and Siiru, a travel-tech platform and mobile application designed to help pilgrims manage and personalise their Umrah.NMC would manage the selection and support of the five recipients while Siiru coordinates and delivers the Umrah programme. The sponsored recipients will join Siirus Labbaik 313 Umrah programme, which covers pre-departure orientation and preparation, the guided Umrah journey and support in Saudi Arabia. The package also includes flights, meals, ground transportation, ziarah activities, guidance from a mutawwif and journey support throughout the Umrah.Siiru Regional Operations and Business Development Manager Hisham Talib said the selection of the five recipients was left to NMC as it knew its own community and members best. They know their own jamaah, so its really up to them. They graciously agreed to sponsor five spots and they will decide who they want to select for those five places. He said Siirus wider initiative was aimed at creating opportunities for asnaf who might otherwise be unable to afford Umrah, while connecting them with organisations seeking to contribute through corporate social responsibility and community initiatives. The five recipients were chosen not only based on financial need, but also for their willingness to support others while continuing to grow in their faith. The initiative is intended to provide spiritual renewal and a stronger sense of belonging for the recipients, while encouraging them to continue supporting other new Muslims after returning from Umrah.NMC said the sponsorship reflected its broader aim of recognising new Muslims who continue to volunteer, encourage and support others despite facing their own spiritual, family and financial adjustments after embracing Islam. The initiative also seeks to remove financial barriers to Umrah while strengthening individuals who are already contributing to the wider new Muslim community.

Police open to assisting MOH with mercy flights for remote areas - Sinardaily - 15/09 4:12 pm

KUALA LUMPUR Police is open to assisting the Ministry of Health (MOH) with mercy flights to transport patients requiring emergency treatment from remote areas.Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail, however, said the Police Air Operations Force (PGU) currently faced constraints in terms of available air assets, given its vast operational area and the size of the force nationwide. He said the air assets currently available in Sarawak were limited to two fixed-wing aircraft and one helicopter. While the need may be quite urgent at this moment, I believe this is something we can consider for the future and to foster better cooperation with the ministry concerned.Perhaps through the acquisition of new assets or other means, we can facilitate collaboration between the ministry and agencies to ensure that their duties and responsibilities are carried out more effectively in the future, he said.He was speaking at a press conference after the Senior Police Officer Rank Insignia Presentation and Handover of Duties Ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here today. It was previously reported that Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said four government agencies would assist MOH in operating mercy flights to ensure residents in remote areas requiring medical treatment continued to have access to healthcare services. The temporary mercy flight service will be provided pending the completion of an investigation into the Flying Doctor Service (FDS) helicopter crash in Miri, Sarawak, on Sept 8, in which the aircraft caught fire.On the progress of the crash investigation, Mohd Khalid expressed his condolences to the victims families and said police had so far recorded statements from 20 witnesses. He said additional statements would be recorded before the investigation papers were completed.Meanwhile, Mohd Khalid said police were finalising their investigation into a report lodged by Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim, who claimed he had been coerced into signing the Proclamation Instrument seeking to remove the 11th Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. He said the matter was sensitive and required thorough scrutiny, taking into account both the police investigation and the customs and traditions of Negeri Sembilan. We are still preparing the investigation papers and may require further action, as well as input from the Attorney Generals Chambers and other relevant parties, he said.Ismail had claimed that he was forced to sign the document before lodging a police report on Sept 8 to enable the authorities to investigate the matter

New Muslims Community Conference 2026 explores path to healing Malaysia's racial divide - Sinardaily - 15/09 3:42 pm

KUALA LUMPUR A national unity forum has called on Malaysians to move beyond simply avoiding conflict between communities and instead build genuine trust, warning that ties will remain fragile as long as most people continue to engage only with those who look, think and live like themselves. The New Muslims Community Conference 2026, themed "Bridging Two Worlds, Healing One Nation," brought together speakers from the media, business, civil society and Muslim revert communities to explore whether Malaysia could shift from managing racial tensions to fostering real belonging among its people.Held here recently, the conference featured four panel discussions: how online fear is manufactured and spread, how poverty and wealth have become tangled with racial stereotypes, how housing patterns have quietly segregated communities, and what it means to navigate multiple racial, cultural and religious identities at once. The first panel, "The Digital Battlefield," examined how race and religion are mobilised online, where minor incidents can escalate into national controversies and outrage often outpaces understanding. The second, "What's Your 'Type'?," looked at how poverty and wealth have become racially coded, shaping perceptions around hiring, credit, contracts and business trust. The third, "The Neighbourhood Without Neighbours," addressed the quiet separation within residential communities, where Malaysians increasingly live among people of similar backgrounds. The fourth, "Living Between Two Worlds," centred on Muslim reverts and their experience of embracing Islam while continuing to navigate family, culture and identity.A short discussion, "Leaders' Role in Bridging Malaysia's Racial Divide," moderated by Sinar Daily Editor Tasnim Lokman and featuring former diplomat Neow Choo Seong, focused specifically on leadership's role in addressing division.Beyond the main stage, booths were set up for participating organisations and communities to engage directly with visitors.Speakers repeatedly returned to the idea that reverts occupy a distinctive position in rebuilding trust, having lived on both sides of the religious divide.Al-Khaadem founder and president Datuk Dr Sheikh Hussain Yee said reverts carry a responsibility to model coexistence."That is our responsibility today: to remind everyone that we should live together in peace and harmony

Don't rush to replace your MyKad, says Home Minister - Sinardaily - 15/09 3:27 pm

PORT DICKSON - The people have been advised not to rush to replace their MyKad when applications for the new version open on Sept 17, to avoid congestion at National Registration Department (NRD) offices.Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the replacement exercise for the new MyKad, which comes with about 50 additional security features, would be carried out in phases, while existing cards would remain valid for daily transactions."I would like to advise people not to rush to replace their MyKad. There are currently 24 million MyKad cards in circulation, with an average of 180,000 to 200,000 cards issued each month, he told reporters here today. He said the replacement of the MyKad would not affect subsidy balances or eligibility for subsidies linked to the identity card."There is no issue regarding the subsidy balance...the records are based on the existing MyKad, he said.Meanwhile, Saifuddin Nasution said the department handles between 13,000 and 15,000 cases of unregistered births each year, a figure he described as still high even though Malaysia gained independence decades ago.He said failure to register births was due to various factors, including lack of information, social problems and family issues, which could ultimately affect the childrens future."The reality is that there are still people who lack the basic knowledge that every birth must be registered, and this is still regarded as something normal, he said, adding that parents or guardians gave various reasons for failing to register their childrens births, including financial difficulties and family constraints, even though birth registration is free.In this regard, he urged parents, guardians and members of the public with information on unregistered births to come forward to NRD offices for assistance. The MyKad has been Malaysia's national identity card since it was first introduced on Sept 5, 2001, replacing the old blue IC.The New Structure MyKad marks the first major overhaul of the card in more than two decades
