Kota Damansara rep submits petition against proposed data centre development after residents raise concerns - Sinardaily - 15/07 7:14 pm

SHAH ALAM - Kota Damansara assemblyman Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim has submitted a petition objecting to a proposed data centre development, following concerns raised by residents over the project's location and the public objection process. The move comes as today marks the final day for the public to submit objections to the proposal."As for now, my office has already submitted the petition against the development of the data centre in that particular area because today is the last day to submit the petition."I will get more information from Petaling Jaya City Council," he said.In the meantime, when contacted by Sinar Daily, Izuan noted that his office was initially unaware of the proposed development, saying the matter only came to their attention after it was highlighted by residents and the Residents' Association (RA).However, he assured that his office had acted immediately by lodging a petition and would seek further clarification from the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).He said his office had not received prior information about the proposed project before residents raised the issue."My office does not have any information regarding this issue until it was raised by the residents and the RA," he added. The proposed development came to residents' attention after Petaling Jaya City Council put up a public notice seeking feedback on an application to surrender and re-alienate land for the construction of a data centre on Lot 50900, Jalan Rimba Riang, Seksyen 9, Kota Damansara.Residents have questioned the suitability of locating a data centre within a residential neighbourhood and near a school, while also criticising the public consultation process.Among the issues raised are the seven-day objection period, claims that the notice board was only installed a few days before the deadline and allegations that the reference number required for online submissions could not be found, preventing some residents from lodging objections electronically. The issue gained traction on social media after residents urged the local council to extend the objection period and provide greater transparency on the proposed development.Izuan said he would engage with Petaling Jaya City Council to obtain further details on the proposal and the approval process before determining the next course of action.

Legal entry points need stronger systems to detect suspicious arrivals, expert says amid Forest City controversy - Sinardaily - 15/07 5:23 pm

SHAH ALAM Allegations that Israeli nationals entered Malaysia through legal channels have highlighted the difficulties authorities face in identifying potential security threats among travellers carrying valid travel documents, a security expert said. The issue arose following claims that Israeli nationals participated in the Network School programme at Forest City, Johor, using passports issued by other countries. While their reported entry was legal based on the documents presented, the controversy has sparked questions over whether Malaysia's existing screening mechanisms are capable of identifying individuals whose full background may not be apparent from their travel documents alone.A security expert, who requested anonymity, said the use of second-country passports can complicate efforts to establish a traveller's complete identity, as immigration checks are generally conducted based on the passport presented at the point of entry."Travellers holding passports issued by international organisations, such as the United Nations, would also not raise immediate red flags, as such documents are not inherently invalid under national immigration law, he said.Asked how Malaysia could strengthen security at its borders, the expert said one approach was to assess whether a traveller's appearance was broadly consistent with the nationality stated on the passport, although he acknowledged the limitations of such a method. The expert also warned against placing excessive emphasis on monitoring passengers from particular flights, saying such practices could amount to profiling."By focusing on certain flights, we may be practising profiling, which is a bad word in terms of human rights and travel rights

MCMC tackles full signal but no internet issue - Sinardaily - 15/07 2:54 pm

KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) together with service providers are implementing various improvement measures to overcome the problem of users receiving full telephone signals but no internet access.Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said among the measures implemented to overcome the problem of core line failures is upgrading the transmission network using high-capacity optical fibre. She said the measures also involve the implementation of link redundancy and the provision of alternative transmission routes to reduce the risk or single point of failure."The issue of lack of internet access even though users receive strong telephone signals or full bars can occur due to several factors that affect the quality of service," she said when responding to a question from Datuk Anyi Ngau (GPS-Baram) who asked the Communications Ministry to state a comprehensive plan to overcome the core line failure problem during an oral question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.Teo said the situation could occur due to network capacity congestion as a result of high data usage as well as disruption or damage to the transmission line.Other physical factors that also contribute are incidents of fibre optic cable cutting, vandalism, theft, natural disasters, threats from wild animals and construction works."Apart from network factors, user experience is also influenced by the condition of the device, phone settings, type of subscription plan and remaining data quota available," she said.According to her, to ensure service continuity in the event of disruption, MCMC has also upgraded support facilities such as backup power generation systems, in addition to all communication sites being continuously monitored by service providers through the Network Monitoring Centre (NMC) which operates 24 hours."To improve the security of towers under the JENDELA Plan initiative, service providers have taken steps to strengthen communication tower sites at risk by installing anti-theft and vandalism equipment such as installing iron conduit to prevent copper cables from being cut and stolen," she said

Selangor to roll out free breakfast for 120,000 students from August - Sinardaily - 14/07 4:03 pm

SHAH ALAM - The implementation of the free breakfast programme for students in Selangor draws inspiration from several developed nations that have proven the initiative is not a waste but rather an investment in children's wellbeing.Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said several countries have long implemented free breakfast provision in schools, showing positive effects on students' welfare and development. He said Selangor will implement the programme starting this August, involving about 120,000 students in 965 schools including primary schools, secondary schools, Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) religious schools as well as institutions registered with the Selangor State Education Department (JPN)."Developed nations such as Finland and the United Kingdom have long proven that free breakfast is not a waste but an investment."India also introduced it in 2022 and saw a marked increase in attendance as well as a decline in student dropout rates," he said in a statement on Facebook on Tuesday.Sinar reported on June 15 that the Selangor government would implement the Free Breakfast programme for 120,000 students in 965 schools across the state as an initiative under Phase 1 of the Selangor Resilience Reinforcement Package (PPDTS).The programme was introduced to help ease the burden on students affected by the cost of living, particularly those who do not have time for breakfast before going to school.Meanwhile, Amirudin said the programme will be delivered two to three times a week to students identified through JPN Selangor data to help reduce the burden on families in need.He said recipients of the programme have already been identified, with an implementation mechanism nearly similar to the long-running Supplementary Food Scheme (RMT)."Selangor is moving in the same direction by making schools not just a comfortable place to learn but a place that safeguards every child's wellbeing."This is among the Selangor government's efforts to help parents amid the crisis affecting West Asia," he said.

MELAKA - The Melaka government is actively negotiating with several airlines, including low-cost carriers (LCCs), to launch new domestic and international flight routes aimed at enhancing air connectivity and driving growth in the state's tourism and economic sectors.State Public Works, Infrastructure, Public Amenities and Transport Committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said the proposed routes include Batam in Indonesia, Penang, and Kota Bharu, while opportunities are also being explored in Thailand, Vietnam, and China."The primary focus of this initiative is to strengthen the regional aviation network and connect high-value tourism and investment markets to Melaka International Airport (LTAM)," he told the State Assembly today. He was responding to a question from Low Chee Leong (PH-Kota Laksamana) on the state's plans for LTAM over the next five years.Hameed said the resumption of the Pekanbaru-Melaka-Pekanbaru direct flight operated by Wings Air on June 10 has already contributed to an increase in foreign tourist arrivals, particularly from Indonesia. The state government is targeting about 700,000 Indonesian tourist arrivals this year, representing an increase of nearly 30 per cent from the 515,086 visitors recorded in 2025.He added that the Pekanbaru route also serves as an important transit hub for travellers from major Indonesian cities such as Jakarta, Batam, Medan, and Surabaya, providing easier access to Melaka via Pekanbaru."The state's air connectivity strategy is focused on expanding health tourism, heritage tourism, and the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) sector, while also attracting more foreign investment into Melaka."For the Indonesian market, we aim to launch the Melaka-Batam route by the end of this year, while efforts are also being intensified to establish direct connections from major cities in China to Melaka," he said.Hameed also revealed that discussions are ongoing with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to attract regional airlines to operate flights between Bangkok, Thailand, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and LTAM.Meanwhile, he said the federal government has no immediate plans to extend LTAM's runway, as the existing infrastructure is sufficient to support current operations. He noted that although LTAM has the capacity to handle up to 500,000 passengers annually, it recorded only 39,222 passengers in 2025.The airport's existing runway is capable of accommodating Code 4C aircraft, including the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320

Experts reject blanket school metal detectors to avoid prison-like environments - Sinardaily - 11/07 8:30 am

SHAH ALAM - Installing metal detectors across Malaysia's nearly 10,000 schools could inadvertently transform nurturing classrooms into hostile, prison-like environments while completely failing to address the root causes of student violence, experts warned. The security debate has gained momentum following a series of distressing campus bullying incidents and weapon-related attacks. However, prominent analysts argue that implementing a blanket, high-tech security policy nationwide would induce massive financial deficits without actively solving student behavioral issues.Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) education expert Dr Anuar Ahmad asserted that academic institutions must remain safe havens for development rather than high-surveillance facilities. He noted that because only a small fraction of schools face chronic disciplinary risks, a uniform deployment of metal detectors would be an inefficient use of ministry funding."There is no need to install metal detectors in every school
