Govt urged to expedite total vaping ban amid rise in drug-laced vape cases - Sinardaily - 21/08 4:29 pm KUALA LUMPUR - The government must expedite its decision to impose a total ban on vaping to curb the growing threat posed by vape liquids containing synthetic psychoactive substances.Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) president Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin said vape liquids marketed under names such as "Piu Piu and "Magic Mushroom could no longer be regarded as isolated cases, as they were increasingly being exploited to conceal, distribute and consume illicit substances among youths and schoolchildren. He welcomed the Health Ministry's (MOH) move towards banning vaping, particularly open-system devices, and urged the matter to be brought before the Cabinet without delay."However, the government must urgently bring the matter to the Cabinet for a decision and announce a clear timeline, implementation mechanism and transition plan leading to a total ban on vaping, he said in a statement today.Commenting on the increase in cases, Ahmad Fahmi said statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Narcotics Crime Investigation Department showed 168 cases and 267 arrests involving vape liquids laced with synthetic drugs as of June 10 this year, compared with 108 cases and 138 arrests recorded throughout last year.He said the development was a warning that syndicates were adapting their drug distribution methods to the culture and lifestyle of young people by using vape liquids containing various synthetic psychoactive substances. He added that for teenagers already affected by such substances, rehabilitation measures, including health screening, counselling, addiction treatment and family support, should be prioritised over punitive action or stigmatisation |

Foreigners at premises not necessarily applying for MyKad - JPN - Sinardaily - 20/08 10:53 am PUTRAJAYA - The presence of any individual at the National Registration Department (JPN) premises, including foreigners, does not necessarily mean they are applying for or will be issued a MyKad, the department said.It said JPN provides various registration and documentation services involving both citizens and non-citizens, depending on the type of transaction being carried out.In a post on its social media platforms, JPN said among the services involving non-citizens were birth registration and civil marriage registration with foreign spouses."Therefore, do not draw conclusions solely based on a persons presence at JPN premises or a photograph without knowing the actual purpose of the visit, it said. The clarification was issued following claims linking the presence of foreign individuals at JPN premises to applications for identity cards. The department also clarified that the pink birth certificate only serves as proof that a birth has been registered in Malaysia and does not indicate that the individual is a Malaysian citizen. It said the certificate is also issued to non-citizens, including those who do not meet the requirements to obtain Malaysian citizenship."This is because every birth that occurs in Malaysia must be registered regardless of whether the childs mother or father is a Malaysian citizen or a non-citizen."Such registration is important to ensure every birth is officially recorded and does not mean Malaysian citizenship has been granted to the individual concerned, it said |

Open burning cases spike with 62 high-risk sites identified - Sinardaily - 18/08 4:13 pm KUALA LUMPUR - A total of 18,432 open burning cases involving forests, shrubland and waste were recorded by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) from January to July this year, compared with 9,941 cases during the same period last year.JBPM director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad said the figure was also higher than the 16,294 cases recorded during the same period in 2024.In view of this, he said JBPM was now specifically monitoring 183 locations nationwide identified as being prone to open burning based on records from the past five years."Of these, 62 locations have been identified as being at risk of large-scale fires involving areas exceeding 25 hectares, which could make it difficult for us to mobilise teams when they occur, so we are monitoring them closely, he told reporters after officiating the Firefighting Skills Hub here today.Nor Hisham said large-scale open fires were currently occurring frequently in Sarawak, including in Sri Aman and Mukah, while the Peninsula had also recorded many incidents, albeit on a smaller scale. He said Sabah was among the areas receiving attention due to its vegetation and terrain, which could cause fires to spread rapidly and become difficult to control."Based on records from 2024, seven locations with major fires were identified around Kota Kinabalu, with the areas also included among the 62 high-risk locations being monitored by JBPM."Among the main factors contributing to the increase in open burning are hot weather conditions in certain areas, he said.Meanwhile, Nor Hisham said his department was focusing on preparations to face weather changes expected to affect Malaysia following the Super El Nino phenomenon. He said preparations were being made early, taking into account weather forecasts, including the impact of the phenomenon, which is expected to occur in the Pacific in November, with its effects expected to be felt in Malaysia around the third or fourth week of January next year |

Becoming a doctor requires more than medical knowledge - Sinardaily - 17/08 11:09 am PREPARING to enter the workforce as a graduate medical officer, or houseman, requires more than medical knowledge, as strong mental and physical preparation is equally important.Kelantan Health Department deputy state health director (Medical) Dr Rohana Daud said the demanding nature of a career in medicine should be taken seriously, particularly by graduates preparing to undergo housemanship. She said housemen should have the courage to share their problems and seek help when facing difficulties during their training, rather than keeping their struggles to themselves. The advice highlighted that the challenges faced by trainee doctors were not limited to clinical duties, but also involved managing pressure while adapting to the working environment. In this context, early exposure to the realities of housemanship could help aspiring doctors understand what to expect and make better preparations before entering hospital service. At the same time, the Mental Health Support Group for Graduate Medical Officers (HEARTS) available at every hospital provided housemen with a channel to seek advice and support when facing difficulties. The involvement of specialist doctors and counsellors in these groups could serve as an important mechanism to ensure housemen did not feel they had to face pressure or difficulties alone.Such an approach was also important because seeking help when facing difficulties should not be regarded as a weakness, but rather as part of ensuring that doctors could complete their training effectively. In addition, the support provided needed to be accompanied by a working environment that encouraged housemen to seek help without fear or embarrassment about sharing their problems.Early preparation, exposure to the realities of the profession and access to support channels were among the elements that could help housemen navigate their training more effectively. Most importantly, aspiring doctors needed to understand that they not only had a responsibility to care for their patients health, but also to look after their own wellbeing and capacity so they could fulfil that responsibility effectively. |

Who will keep Malaysias economy running 20 years from now? - Sinardaily - 17/08 10:36 am MALAYSIA is facing an increasingly worrying demographic reality as the number of children continues to decline, raising bigger questions about the future of the countrys workforce over the next two decades.Data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) showed that the population aged between zero and 14 fell from 21.6 per cent in 2025 to 21.2 per cent in 2026, while those aged 65 and above increased from 8.0 per cent to 8.4 per cent over the same period. At the same time, the median age of Malaysians rose from 31.3 years to 31.7 years, reflecting the countrys shift towards an ageing society. The trend may not have a significant impact today, but its implications are likely to become more apparent when the smaller generation of children enters the workforce in the next 15 to 20 years. If the number of babies born continues to decline each year, Malaysia risks facing a shortage of productive workers to fill various sectors of the economy.More concerning is that the elderly population will continue to grow, meaning a smaller working population will have to shoulder the costs of healthcare, welfare and social protection for an increasingly ageing population.A similar situation has already emerged in several developed countries, including Japan and South Korea.Although Malaysia still enjoys a demographic dividend, with more than 70 per cent of its population within the working-age group of 15 to 64, this advantage will not last if birth rates continue to decline. The reality is that fewer children today are not merely a statistical issue, but an indicator of the size of the future workforce. The question is, why are more couples choosing to have fewer children or delaying parenthood? The rising cost of living is among the key factors frequently cited, with house prices, education costs, childcare expenses, nursery fees and daily necessities prompting many young couples to be more cautious before expanding their families.Lifestyle changes also play a role, as many are choosing to marry later, focus on their careers or achieve financial stability before starting a family. The question that deserves greater discussion is whether existing policies are sufficiently family-friendly to encourage young couples to have more children.Various incentives, including tax relief, maternity leave and assistance for families, have been introduced, but the question remains whether these measures are genuinely capable of easing the increasingly high cost of raising children. In the long term, the government also needs to assess whether childcare facilities, flexible working arrangements, affordable housing and support for working parents should be strengthened as part of the countrys demographic strategy.Malaysia still has time to act, but every year that sees the number of children decline brings the country closer to a point where the new workforce may no longer be able to replace retiring generations. The question now is no longer why Malaysia has fewer children, but who will drive the countrys economy when todays generation leaves the workforce two decades from now? |

'People could get hurt': Conservationists decry AI wildlife visuals - Sinardaily - 16/08 10:59 am KUALA LUMPUR - The black-and-white image appears to show the unlikeliest of interactions: an orangutan cradling endangered leopard cubs deep in the jungles of Malaysia's Sabah state. But the viral image is not just unlikely, it is fake, part of a trend of wildlife images generated by artificial intelligence that experts warn endanger animals and people.AFP fact-checkers have debunked scores of similar synthetic visuals, from an elephant climbing a tree to escape flooding in Myanmar to a pink dolphin leaping out of water in the Philippines. The images are often accompanied by heartwarming anecdotes and have circulated widely in multiple languages on platforms such as Facebook, TikTok and X.They may seem more like feel-good fiction than dangerous misinformation, but experts warn hyper-realistic visuals of wild animals behaving like pets, or even like humans, can distort public perceptions of wildlife and harm conservation efforts."This misunderstanding can lead people to approach animals too closely or interact with them in unsafe ways," Jose Guerrero-Casado, a zoology professor at Spain's University of Cordoba, told AFP.He cited a widely reported incident in China's northwest Xinjiang region in January, where a woman was attacked by a rare snow leopard after trying to get closer for a photo.China's forestry department said it stepped up patrols after the incident and warned the public to maintain a safe distance when encountering wild animals.Sowing doubtConservationists say AI visuals portraying wild animals as cute or cuddly make it harder for social media users to discern what is real and can fuel exploitation. They increase demand for certain species "to be used in the tourism industry as photo props, exploited to make social media content or to be kept as pets", said Chris Lewis, a researcher at the international wildlife charity Born Free. And while the visuals could encourage some people to support animal protection, "the negative impacts outweigh that completely," said Jenny Roberts of conservation group WWF."People could get hurt," she told AFP.WWF uses real images for its fundraising efforts, but fake content online "desensitises" people to even the most incredible original visuals, she said."When you do have something remarkable, people question it," Roberts said, recounting an incident where a camera trap set up by her charity captured a tiger with five cubs in China.Such footage had never been filmed before in the East Asian country, she said."But when we put the content out there, we were questioned on social media: 'Is this AI-generated?'"'Major threat'A September study in the journal Conservation Biology, co-authored by Guerrero-Casado, concluded that the rapid spread of AI misinformation and its potential to harm environmental efforts is a "major threat" to society. The researchers highlighted another challenge for those working in conservation: AI images "could affect the ability of people to identify species" and cause misunderstandings about the abundance and distribution of wildlife.Scientists often mine data from citizen science platforms that accept photos and recordings of wildlife submitted by users. But AI generation and manipulation could lead to flawed research, several experts warned in a recent commentary in the journal Nature. They called for more robust authentication of submissions, and education of users about the risks of manipulating images and recordings.Meta, Facebook's parent company, and TikTok require users to label realistic visuals that have been generated or significantly altered using AI |
