Tens of thousands of migrants briefly cross into Spain's north African territory of Ceuta from Morocco.

The European Union (EU) will hold an extraordinary videoconference on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, according to Italy's ANSA news agency on Saturday.

Spain says virtually all of the estimated 60,000 migrants who stormed its North African enclave of Ceuta have left.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Saturday called on the European Union to convene an extraordinary meeting of interior ministers to coordinate a common response to the recent migrant crisis in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta while criticizing what he described as the "selfish" attitude of some member states.

Spain's Interior Ministry said around 50,000 people crossed into the enclave from Thursday morning and estimated that 48,300 had returned by 6 p.m

Spain said Friday that it had brought a massive influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta under control, with the vast majority of those who crossed the border in recent days voluntarily returning to Morocco.

The Spanish government has reinforced security in Ceuta by deploying additional National Police officers, Civil Guard personnel and military units, while emergency reception facilities remain under heavy pressure.

The border crisis boiled over Thursday and continued on Friday with security forces clashing with migrants on the Moroccan side of the border.

The announcement comes after local authorities in Ceuta had asked the central government in Madrid for reinforcements to manage a border crisis that had been building up.

More than 1,500 migrants have reached Spains North African enclave of Ceuta by sea over the past week.
