Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the deadline for submitting licence applications is Dec 31. Strengthen digital safety, impose stiffer penalties to tackle issue of .. - 27/12 2:46 pm

KUALA LUMPUR : Strengthening digital safety and imposing stiffer penalties are among the key measures proposed by the Alliance for a Safe Community to check rising incidents of missing children and child sex abuse. Its chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, said the urgency to address this issue cannot be overstated, as statistics show that many missing children are at risk of falling victim to exploitation, including human trafficking and sexual abuse. ???These alarming trends represent a grave ..

threat to the safety and well-being of our children - the most vulnerable members of our society. Every child deserves to live free from fear, harm and exploitation. ???Every missing child is a tragedy that leaves families devastated and communities shaken. Child sex abuse, whether committed by strangers or individuals known to the child, is a heinous crime with long-lasting psychological and physical effects,??? he said in a statement here today. Lee said it is essential to strengthen cybersecurity measures to detect and shut down illicit activities, as many predators operate online. Besides, parents must also be educated on how to monitor their children???s online activities effectively. He also called for comprehensive sex education, with schools implementing age-appropriate sex education programmes that teach children about personal boundaries, recognising inappropriate behaviour and reporting abuse without fear. All institutions including schools, religious organisations and recreational centres must adopt mandatory reporting protocols for suspected child abuse, he said. Hotlines and digital platforms for anonymous reporting should be widely promoted, while laws protecting children must be robust and rigorously enforced. ???Stiffer penalties should be imposed on perpetrators of child sex abuse and human trafficking. Additionally, law enforcement agencies need enhanced tools and training to locate missing children swiftly and handle abuse cases with sensitivity,??? he said. Lee said that public awareness of these issues needs to be enhanced, with parents, guardians and caregivers being educated about the risks that children face and equipped with knowledge to identify signs of grooming or abuse. Community participation at all levels of society, such as neighbourhood watch programmes, community patrols and volunteer initiatives, should also be fostered, as they can act as a first line of defence in safeguarding children. Lee also called for adequate funding for shelter homes, counselling services and rehabilitation programmes for victims of such incidents. ???We urge all stakeholders - parents, educators, policymakers law enforcement, and civil society - to come together in creating a safer environment for our children. We must be relentless in our efforts to protect the innocence and dignity of our children, for in doing so, we safeguard the future of our nation,??? he said.

OUTGOING national men???s doubles head coach Tan Bin Shen has fulfilled 60% of his personal goals since taking up the job in December 2020. Bin Shen, who ends his service with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on Jan 13, said the 40% unfulfilled aspirations included his inability to guide 2022 world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to secure the Paris 2024 Olympic gold medal. ???Of course, when I joined BAM, I had many targets. One of them was at the 2024 Olympics, but the gold ..

remains elusive. ???For me, the 2024 Olympics is among the most memorable because it was my first time there. I could feel that many people hoped the men???s doubles (Aaron-Wooi Yik) would win gold, but they only made it to the semi-finals,??? he told reporters during a training session here today. Aaron-Wooi Yik showed great fighting spirit, rallying back to retain their Olympic bronze medal by defeating Denmark???s Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen 16-21, 22-20, 21-19. Bin Shen also expressed satisfaction with the improvement shown by the country???s men???s doubles players under his guidance, including Muhammad Haikal Nazri and Wan Arif Wan Junaidi, who did well at several international tournaments. The 40-year-old coach hopes his charges will give him a farewell gift by winning the Malaysian Open 2025, scheduled from Jan 7-12. This tournament will mark his final task before joining the Hong Kong national squad in February. Regarding his new role in Hong Kong, Bin Shen said he has been offered a two-year contract to coach their doubles squad, which includes overseeing the women???s and mixed doubles. ???The Hong Kong squad is not very large, so all doubles categories will train together,??? said Bin Shen, who will join two other Malaysian coaches in Hong Kong, Jeremy Gan and Loh Wei Sheng. Bin Shen revealed that former Malaysian men???s singles player Wong Choong Hann, now the head coach of Hong Kong???s national squad, played a key role in recruiting him for his new job. ???A few months back, Choong Hann approached me during a tournament, but at that time, I wasn???t sure yet because I had to consider my family,??? he said. The former national player added that he has not yet planned to bring his family to Hong Kong and will head there alone for now.

KUALA LUMPUR : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described former Indian prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who died on Thursday night, as a ???cherished friend??? and a pivotal figure in India???s modern history. The Prime Minister praised Manmohan Singh for his uprightness and steadfastness, qualities that earned him respect as a statesman. ???The praise that will follow in the days ahead will be truly well-deserved. In a deeply personal revelation, Anwar shared an anecdote highlighting Dr Manmohan Singh???s generosity and humanity during a challenging period of his life. ???Not many people know this, and it is time that I share it with Malaysians: during the years of my incarceration, he extended a kindness that he didn???t have to ??? one that was neither politically expedient nor, as one can imagine, appreciated by the Malaysian government at that time. Yet, true to his character, he did it anyway. ???He offered scholarships for my children, particularly my son, Ihsan. Although I had declined the gracious offer, such a gesture undoubtedly showed his extraordinary humanity and generosity, demonstrative, as the Bard would have it, of a man so full of ???the milk of human kindness,?????? Anwar said. Anwar further described Manmohan Singh as a true friend who stood by him in his darkest days. ???In those dark days, as I navigated the labyrinth of imprisonment, he stood by me as a true friend. Rembia rep Jailani shifted to opposition in Melaka Assembly - 27/12 12:05 am

MELAKA : Rembia state assemblyman Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis, who was previously part of the government bloc, has been moved to the opposition bloc, according to Melaka State Assembly Speaker Datuk Ibrahim Durum. Ibrahim said the decision was made after reviewing several matters concerning Muhammad Jailani???s membership in PAS, following PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan???s announcement at a press conference in Parliament on July 16. He explained that he had sent a letter ..

to Takiyuddin seeking confirmation on the matter but had not received any response. ???The assemblyman???s admission is vague, merely claiming he is a PAS member, and that is the only evidence I have (to make a decision),??? he said during the Melaka State Assembly sitting at Seri Negeri today. With this latest development, the number of assemblymen supporting the government now stands at 25, while the opposition has three, he added. Muhammad Jailani, representing Barisan Nasional, won the Rembia seat with a majority of 860 votes in a five-cornered contest during the 2021 Melaka state election. In July last year, UMNO suspended Muhammad Jailani???s membership for six years for allegedly sabotaging the party by attending the announcement of the Perikatan Nasional candidate for the Simpang Jeram by-election in Bakri, Johor.

KUALA LUMPUR : PAS??? move to politicise the recent Christmas celebration at the Housing and Local Government Ministry was disrespectful to the rights of Malaysia???s multi-racial and multi-religious society, according to three DAP leaders. DAP Central Executive Committee members Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, Young Syefura Othman and Syahredzan Johan today criticised PAS??? actions, saying the party should defend and uphold the rights and interests of all communities as enshrined in the Federal ..

Constitution rather than divide society with narrow politics. Sheikh Umar, Young Syefura and Syahredzan said Malaysia???s ethnic and racial diversity should be celebrated, understood and respected, not manipulated for political gain under the guise of religion. ???PAS is urged to embrace the spirit of Malaysia in national politics and abandon extreme politics that fails to celebrate unity in diversity in our country.

SYDNEY: Australian firefighters said Friday they were fighting to control a bushfire racing through a national park that has consumed an area the size of Singapore. The eastern state of Victoria has faced extreme fire conditions in the past week, with numerous blazes forcing evacuations in dozens of rural communities. Fernandes sent off as Man Utd lose 2-0 at Wolves - 27/12 9:44 am

BRUNO Fernandes was sent off as Manchester United crashed to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat at lowly Wolves, while Erling Haaland missed a penalty as crisis-torn Manchester City failed to end their dismal run with a 1-1 draw against Everton on Thursday. United suffered a third successive loss in all competitions to leave new boss Ruben Amorim with five defeats in his 10 games since replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag. Fernandes was dismissed two minutes into the second half at Molineux for a second ..

booking after fouling Nelson Semedo. United???s 10 men cracked in the 58th minute when Matheus Cunha???s corner went straight in as goalkeeper Andre Onana flapped under pressure from Matt Doherty and Santiago Bueno. Hwang Hee-chan compounded Amorim???s misery when he tapped in with just seconds left. It was another bitter blow for United, who endured a humiliating 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford last weekend after losing 4-3 in the League Cup at Tottenham. With his team marooned in 14th place -- just eight points above the relegation zone -- Amorim???s woes might not be over, with United facing in-form Newcastle on Monday before travelling to Liverpool in their first game of 2025. ???It???s so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it???s more difficult,??? Amorim said. ???Of course, when you lose, when we don???t win, it???s a step back. It was really hard with the sending off.??? Wolves climbed out of the bottom three thanks to their second successive win under new manager Vitor Pereira. Champions Manchester City have just one victory in their last 13 games in all competitions as their Christmas schedule started in disappointing fashion. Bernardo Silva put City in front early on before Iliman Ndiaye salvaged a point for Everton. Seven minutes into the second half, Haaland had the chance to end his longest goal drought at the Etihad but Jordan Pickford dived low to his right to make the save. City are languishing in seventh place and sit five points adrift of the top four, with their astonishing decline showing no sign of ending. ???Of course we need results and we didn???t get it. The team played really good again in all departments and unfortunately could not win,??? said City boss Pep Guardiola, whose side are at risk of failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 15 years. ???We accept it. It is life. We did not expect it to not win games many times. But what do you have to do? Continue.??? At Stamford Bridge, second-placed Chelsea were stunned by Fulham???s late fightback for a 2-1 win in a dramatic west London derby. It was Chelsea???s first home defeat against Fulham since 1979. Cole Palmer put Chelsea ahead after 16 minutes, the England forward drilling home from the edge of the area after weaving through the Fulham defence in dazzling style. - Forest on the rise - But Fulham levelled with eight minutes left when Antonee Robinson???s cross was headed down by Timothy Castagne and Harry Wilson nodded in from close range. Chelsea were furious, claiming Alex Iwobi had fouled Pedro Neto in the build-up to the goal. But there was worse to come for the Blues in stoppage-time when Rodrigo Muniz converted Sasa Lukic???s pass with a clinical strike. Chelsea are four points behind leaders Liverpool, who have two games in hand and host Leicester later on Thursday. Nottingham Forest climbed to third place after a 1-0 win against sputtering Tottenham at the City Ground thanks to Anthony Elanga???s 28th-minute goal. Forest???s fourth successive win was sweet revenge for boss Nuno Espirito Santo, whose former club Tottenham had Djed Spence sent off in the closing moments for a second booking. Tottenham are stuck in 11th as the pressure mounts on boss Ange Postecoglou. Newcastle swatted aside 10-man Aston Villa 3-0, moving up to fifth place after winning three consecutive league games for the first time since 2023. Jarrod Bowen???s 59th-minute goal gave West Ham a 1-0 win at bottom of the table Southampton after the visitors saw Guido Rodriguez???s red card overturned by VAR. It was a frustrating start for new Saints boss Ivan Juric, who has replaced the sacked Russell Martin. Bournemouth and Crystal Palace shared a goalless draw at the Vitality Stadium.

Liverpool power seven points clear, Man Utd crash at Wolves - 27/12 9:40 am

LIVERPOOL powered seven points clear at the top of the Premier League as the title favourites survived a scare in their 3-1 win against Leicester, while Bruno Fernandes was sent off in Manchester United???s dismal 2-0 defeat at lowly Wolves. Erling Haaland missed a penalty as crisis-torn Manchester City failed to end their dismal run with a 1-1 draw against Everton, but it was United???s travails and Liverpool???s remarkable run that took centre-stage on Thursday. Arne Slot???s side were ..

shocked by Jordan Ayew???s early strike at Anfield, but the leaders recovered their composure to equalise just before the interval through Cody Gakpo. England midfielder Jones marked his 100th top-flight appearance with the second goal soon after half-time. Mohamed Salah???s 19th goal this term wrapped up Liverpool???s 11th win in their last 13 games in all competitions. ???We created enough, but because we went 1-0 down it was a game,??? Liverpool manager Slot said. ???Then you saw how good we are and Leicester didn???t want to come back into the game.??? Liverpool???s comeback lifted them well clear of second-placed Chelsea, who were defeated 2-1 by Fulham earlier in the day. United suffered a third successive loss in all competitions to leave new boss Ruben Amorim with five defeats in his first 10 games. Fernandes was dismissed two minutes into the second half at Molineux for a second bookable offence. United???s 10 men cracked in the 58th minute when Matheus Cunha???s corner went straight in as goalkeeper Andre Onana flapped under pressure. Hwang Hee-chan compounded Amorim???s misery when he tapped in with just seconds left. Losing to fourth-bottom Wolves was another bitter blow for United, who endured a humiliating 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford last weekend after losing 4-3 in the League Cup at Tottenham. Champions Manchester City have just one victory in their last 13 games in all competitions as their Christmas schedule started in disappointing fashion. Bernardo Silva put City in front early on before Iliman Ndiaye salvaged a point for Everton. Seven minutes into the second half, Haaland had the chance to end his longest goal drought at the Etihad but Jordan Pickford denied him. City are languishing in seventh place and sit five points adrift of the top four, with their astonishing decline showing no sign of ending. ???Of course we need results and we didn???t get it. The team played really good again in all departments and unfortunately could not win,??? said City boss Pep Guardiola. - Chelsea stunned - At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were stunned by Fulham???s late fightback in a dramatic west London derby. It was Chelsea???s first home defeat against Fulham since 1979. Cole Palmer put Chelsea ahead after 16 minutes, the England forward drilling home from the edge of the area after weaving through the Fulham defence in dazzling style. But Fulham levelled with eight minutes left when Harry Wilson nodded in from close range. There was worse to come for the Blues when Rodrigo Muniz completed the turnaround in the 95th minute. Nottingham Forest climbed to third place after a 1-0 win against sputtering Tottenham at the City Ground.

Two killed in treacherous Sydney-Hobart yacht race - 27/12 8:21 am

SYDNEY: Two sailors have been killed in separate incidents in the treacherous Sydney to Hobart bluewater classic, organisers said Friday, a day after the race began with gale-force winds and high seas forecast. Both crew members -- on Flying Fish Arctos and Bowline -- were hit by booms as the yachts raced southwards along the New South Wales coast after setting off from Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day. Other crew tried to revive them, but were unsuccessful. The race committee said it could not ..

provide further details of the deaths as police were investigating and some family members were yet to be contacted. ???Our thoughts are with the crews, family and friends of the deceased,??? it said in a statement. New South Wales police said the boat crews had notified them of the two deaths during the night. Strong winds were powering the yachts at the time of the sailors' deaths, said David Jacobs, vice commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. ???The lead boats were experiencing speeds of between 25 and 30 knots so they???re travelling extremely fast. The sea was not unusually large from the information I have received,??? Jacobs told reporters. - 'Devastated' - The yacht club will open an investigation to help improve safety in the event, he said. Jacobs added that the deaths would hit the racing community hard. ???On a boat itself they train together, live together, cook together, they do everything together. It would be devastating, as we are devastated,??? he said. Gale-force winds and high seas had been forecast for the 628-nautical mile event, which ends in the Tasmanian state capital Hobart after the fleet tackles the notorious Bass Strait. But this was not an ???extreme??? forecast, Jacobs said. ???These fleets can handle those winds easily. They are ocean racers, they are used to the winds,??? he said. Weather is a critical factor in the race, first held in 1945, with winds and conditions often changing rapidly. Six men died, five boats sank and 55 sailors were rescued in 1998, when a deep depression exploded over the fleet in the Bass Strait. So far 16 yachts have pulled out from the initial fleet of 104, Jacobs said. Alive, last year's overall winner of the Tattersall Cup, which takes into account boat size and other factors, was one of the first casualties, retiring with engine issues. - Race favourite retires - In a major setback, race record holder Comanche retired with mainsail damage, leaving the door open for supermaxi rival LawConnect to win line honours for the second straight year. Comanche, which surged over the finish line in one day, 9 hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds to set a new mark in 2017, was leading when she retired. LawConnect held a lead later on Friday morning of more than eight nautical miles over its nearest rival Celestial, closely followed by Wild Thing. Wild Oats, which has twice won the race -- the last time in 2014 -- was another casualty, with rigging damage.

30 and 29, were detained on Jalan PJU 1a/1 in Ara Damansara after a 30-minute chase. ???A quantity of drugs believed to be methamphetamine weighing approximately 12.87 grams was found in their vehicle, along with a weapon believed to be an electric shock wave device. ???The first suspect, who was driving the vehicle, has 11 prior criminal and five narcotics-related records, while the second suspect has one prior conviction,??? he said in a statement yesterday. Shahrulnizam said the case is being investigated under Sections 307/186/279 of the Penal Code, Section 7 of the Corrosive, Explosive, and Dangerous Weapons Act, Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. ???Members of the public with any information related to the incident can contact the nearest police station or the Petaling Jaya District operations room at 03-79662222,??? he said.

UM lecturer, students among seven questioned over cat deaths - 27/12 8:11 am

KUALA LUMPUR: A lecturer, students from Universiti Malaya (UM), and an animal rights activist are among seven individuals questioned in connection with the recent cat deaths at the university. City police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said that the carcass of a cat, found on Dec 21, was handed over to the police by the activist and has been sent to a veterinary laboratory for examination and autopsy. ???The autopsy will be conducted tomorrow. Also sent for examination and autopsy is the carcass of ..

another cat found on Dec 25 at the parking lot of UM???s Faculty of Sports and Exercise Science,??? he said in a statement today. Kelab Kucing Malaysia had previously called for a thorough investigation into the case. Its president, Khalid Rashid, was reported as saying that while Kelab Kucing Malaysia was not questioning the investigation conducted by the authorities, it hoped the case would be re-examined with the assistance of experts. On Dec 22, police revealed that closed-circuit television footage showed stray dogs attacking the cats. Police said the matter was referred to the Department of Veterinary Services, which verified that the injuries sustained by the cats were consistent with attacks by wild dogs.

Hannah Yeoh files appeal over dismissal of defamation suit against Musa .. - 27/12 8:02 am

KUALA LUMPUR : The legal counsel for Segambut member of parliament, Hannah Yeoh, has filed an appeal in the Court of Appeal today challenging the High Court???s decision to dismiss her defamation suit against former Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Musa Hassan. Hannah, who is also the Minister of Youth and Sports, stated that while she respects the judicial process, she has instructed her counsel to request that the appeal be heard expeditiously. ???I have been advised by my counsel that ..

the full written grounds of judgment from the High Court have not yet been provided. As of now, only a brief explanation is available, listed in writing on the court???s e-review system on Dec 23. ???Therefore, it would be premature at this stage to draw any conclusions about the High Court???s overall decision and the reasons behind it,??? she said in a statement yesterday. On Monday, the media reported that the High Court had dismissed Hannah???s defamation suit against Musa over alleged defamatory statements he made during a forum at Universiti Teknologi MARA four years ago. Judicial Commissioner Arziah Mohamed Apandi ruled that she had failed to prove that the statements made by the defendant were defamatory.

MADANI govt : No one will be marginalised, priority for people???s .. - 27/12 7:58 am

KUALA LUMPUR: The MADANI government will continue to work on building a more inclusive and glorious future for Malaysia, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim He said that currently, the government has formulated a concrete effort to ensure that no citizen is marginalised, regardless of whether they are poor, youth, women, senior citizens, farmers, fishermen, students in urban and rural areas. ???Among the most important priorities of the MADANI government throughout this year is to ..

Helping children recognise true role models - 27/12 7:47 am

Q: My 12-year-old daughter follows all of her favourite celebrities on social media and is always checking her phone for Instagram posts and updates. I have noticed that many of these celebrities post racy photos and expletive-filled rants, which concerns me. How should I address this with my daughter? Focus on the Family Malaysia: The place to start is to have a conversation with your daughter about people in general. You may have probably done this to some extent. However, discuss about ..

people whose lives are truly worth emulating. Who are some of these individuals? What qualities make someone worth ???following???? Name a few names. Set the bar high on people you admire ??? both living and deceased ??? individuals who have selflessly extended themselves for others, giving sacrificially beyond what is considered ???normal???. These individuals believe that there is no greater gift than to lay down their lives for someone else. For example, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Albert Einstein. We all have flaws, and there is no perfect person to model our lives after. However, there are countless individuals who have been exemplary in ways that are worth emulating. Your daughter needs to understand that these people are not focused on posing for selfies or gaining fame. They are not posting racy photos or expletive-filled rants. Instead, they are virtuous individuals of great character, and they stand out culturally because of it. Help your daughter understand that there is nothing wrong with looking up to others. However, ensure she has a clearer roadmap to discovering what these people are truly like on the inside, and to identify those who are genuinely making a positive impact today or who made a difference in the past. Q: As a busy mom with young children, I often have to take them shopping with me. But sometimes, they drive me crazy in the store. Please help. Focus on the Family Malaysia: When families shop together, they are valuing the time spent with each other in everyday life. You may be surprised that many shoppers do not mind being stuck behind a cart steered by a five-year-old ??? as long as mom or dad is in control. However, some outings can become frustrating if we are not prepared. Author Karen Ehman offers some helpful tips for shopping with children. Feed them first, and avoid hot spots: Temptations are everywhere. If children are hungry, you may be inviting trouble ??? let???s face it, we all have our ???hangry??? moments. And if they have not yet learned the difference between needs and wants, it is best to steer clear of certain aisles. Build incentive: Give children a coupon for a special treat ahead of time. If they get through the shopping trip without complaining or misbehaving, they can redeem the treat. Offer financial awareness: If your older child wants something, discuss the cost with them. If they do not have enough money, brainstorm ways they can earn it. Buddy up: Some stages are tougher than others. Coordinate with another parent who???s also struggling to watch each other???s children while you take a solo trip to the store. Most importantly, hang in there. Not every shopping trip will be stress-free but making efforts to guide your children???s behaviour can have a lasting impact. India???s former PM Manmohan Singh dies aged 92 - 27/12 7:43 am

NEW DELHI: Manmohan Singh, the former Indian prime minister whose economic reforms made his country a global powerhouse, has died at the age of 92, current leader Narendra Modi said Thursday. India ???mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders,??? Modi posted on social media platform X shortly after news broke of Singh's passing. ???As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people???s lives.??? Singh was taken to a hospital in New Delhi after he lost ..

consciousness at his home on Thursday, but could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at 9:51 pm local time, according to a statement by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Singh, who held office from 2004 to 2014, is credited with having overseen an economic boom in Asia's fourth-largest economy in his first term, although slowing growth in later years marred his second stint. ???I have lost a mentor and guide,??? opposition Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a statement, adding that Singh had ???led India with immense wisdom and integrity.??? ???Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride,??? said Gandhi, a scion of India's powerful Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and the most prominent challenger to Modi. Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of the opposition in parliament???s upper house, said ???India has lost a visionary statesman, a leader of unimpeachable integrity, and an economist of unparalleled stature.??? President Droupadi Murmu wrote on X that Singh will ???always be remembered for his service to the nation, his unblemished political life and his utmost humility.??? - 'Mr Clean' - Born in 1932 in the mud-house village of Gah in what is now Pakistan, Singh studied economics to find a way to eradicate poverty in India and never held elected office before taking the vast nation's top job. He won scholarships to attend both Cambridge, where he obtained a first in economics, and Oxford, where he completed his PhD. Singh worked in a string of senior civil posts, served as a central bank governor and also held various jobs with global agencies including the United Nations. He was tapped in 1991 by then Congress prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao to reel India back from the worst financial crisis in its modern history. In his first term Singh steered the economy through a period of nine-percent growth, lending India the international clout it had long sought. He also sealed a landmark nuclear deal with the United States that he said would help India meet its growing energy needs. Known as ???Mr Clean???, Singh nonetheless saw his image tarnished during his decade-long tenure when a series of corruption cases became public. Several months before the 2014 elections, Singh said he would retire after the polls, with Sonia Gandhi's son Rahul earmarked to take his place if Congress won. But Congress crashed to its worst-ever result at that time as the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Modi, won in a landslide. Singh -- who said historians would be kinder to him than contemporary detractors -- became a vocal critic of Modi's economic polici

Unaligned policies snag to plastic waste fight - 27/12 7:38 am

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia???s battle against plastic pollution is facing significant challenges due to the absence of a uniform plastic policy, said Universiti Putra Malaysia Faculty of Forestry and Environment senior lecturer Dr Mohd Yusoff Ishak. ???This has led to inconsistent enforcement across the states, with some banning plastic straws and others charging different amounts for plastic bags. This confusion undermines the policy???s effectiveness.??? He was commenting on a recent statement ..

by Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who acknowledged in the Dewan Negara on Dec 17 that existing policies on managing plastic waste were fragmented. Global data and business intelligence platform Statista said Malaysia received more than 405,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste in 2023 from several countries, ranking it among the top importers of such material. He said the fragmented approach to managing single-use plastics has also led to uneven environmental outcomes. ???Weak regulations contribute significantly to plastic pollution, with single-use plastics often ending up in water bodies, harming aquatic life and ecosystems. ???Coastal and riverine ecosystems are among the most affected as plastic waste accumulates in such areas, endangering turtles, fish and seabirds, among others,??? he said. He added that the use of technological solutions, such as Polymateria Lyfecycle Technology, which ???self-destructs??? plastic and safely returns it to nature after a year if not recycled, must be complemented by changes in human behaviour to ensure a sustainable future. ???Implementing a nationwide plastic-related Act is feasible but requires sustained political commitment at all levels of government. A comprehensive Act must go beyond setting recycling targets and address the unique challenges Malaysia faces.??? He said legislation should strengthen waste management in underserved areas, prevent illegal dumping, enforce stricter penalties for repeat offenders and hold producers accountable for the full life cycle of their plastic products. Mohd Yusoff said to address the disconnect between federal and state policies, the federal agency must involve state governments and local authorities in the policymaking process to ensure alignment with regional realities. He also proposed revisiting the role of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation and allocating funds from EPR (extended producer responsibility) initiatives to support municipal waste management improvements. Mohd Yusoff cautioned that without a uniform policy, plastic pollution would jeopardise the country???s net zero carbon goals, with inadequate recycling systems and inconsistent regulations worsening pollution and emissions. ???Public education is also vital as it helps the people understand the broader environmental consequences of plastic pollution, such as its impact on rivers, wildlife, ecosystems and human health, while policies provide a framework to act against those flouting the law.??? Stressing the need for stricter regulations and incentives on the role of industries, he said they must take responsibility for the entire life cycle of their products, including waste collection, recycling and disposal. ???Incorporating incentives such as tax breaks and penalties for non-compliance is essential to engage industries to reduce plastic pollution. Such a framework must address plastic pollution comprehensively, engage multiple stakeholders and support sustainable development,??? he said. Mohd Yusoff also emphasised the need for immediate government action to harmonise efforts across state and local levels through a national plastic policy framework, in which cross-ministry collaboration between the Housing and Local Government Ministry and the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry is crucial. ???These measures should complement the existing Zero Single-Use Plastic roadmap by enhancing alignment, improving enforcement and fostering stakeholder collaboration.???

Basikal lajak menace poses public safety concern - 27/12 7:34 am

PETALING JAYA: Basikal lajak or illegally modified bicycles used for dangerous stunts and racing remains a serious public safety issue with their continued presence on public roads, said Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research chairman Prof Dr Wong Shaw Voon. He said the issue is still critical as most riders are young people engaging in dangerous activities that pose risks to themselves and other road users. ??? Basikal lajak activities are very dangerous. While they may be compared to ..

extreme sports, the key difference is that extreme sports take place in controlled environments, while these activities occur on public roads, which are meant for transport, not racing.??? Wong highlighted the tragic 2017 incident in Johor Bahru where a crash involving teenagers riding modified bicycles resulted in eight deaths and eight others injured. He said although many of these activities occur during the day, they are especially alarming at night when the risks are even higher. ???While many motorists avoid driving late at night, some, like factory workers or those with demanding schedules, have no choice but to travel during late hours. With distractions like basikal lajak on the roads, crashes are almost inevitable. ???Public roads are not designed for such activities, and the consequences of using them irresponsibly can be devastating,??? he said, emphasising the need for collective efforts from the authorities, public and local communities to tackle the root causes of basikal lajak activities. He said allowing children to roam the streets at midnight and engaging in dangerous activities reflects parental failure, while some are not concerned about other people???s children. However, Wong said crashes can affect anyone, including innocent bystanders, and they could lead to tragedies. He warned that failing to address such issues could have far-reaching consequences on youths who disregard the law, as they could contribute to larger societal problems.. ???When they are older, these youths might turn to riding motorcycles and becoming a mat rempit . ???This would worsen the situation, as they might develop a lasting tendency to disregard the law. ???While some of them might change for the better, many will seek the same thrills and carry the habit into adulthood.??? Universiti Putra Malaysia Road Safety Research Centre head Assoc Prof Dr Law Teik Hwa said basikal lajak is a societal problem due to its ???dangerous nature being normalised by the public???, especially on social media. ???Groups promoting modified bicycles on social media often glamorise the risks, encouraging young people to join in. Shops selling and modifying these bicycles worsen the trend. ???To address the matter, social media companies should collaborate to remove such groups, and enforce stricter content policies. Shops should also be regulated with rules against illegal modifications and be held accountable.??? Law said the issue stems from families enabling or failing to stop their children from participating due to cultural norms or lack of awareness about the risks. In some communities, the activity is seen as harmless fun, and parents may neglect to supervise their children. Section 33 of the Child Act 2001 allows legal action against parents who fail to supervise their children, with penalties of up to RM20,000, five years??? imprisonment, or both. ???To tackle this problem, it???s essential to carry out parental education campaigns that emphasise the dangers of modified bicycles, using real-life examples for greater impact. ???A combined approach of enforcement, education, and community involvement is essential to stop the basikal lajak menace.???

Call to address disparities in autism care service provision - 27/12 7:28 am

PETALING JAYA: The National Autism Society of Malaysia has called on the government to conduct a comprehensive mapping exercise to address regional disparities in the provision of autism care services. Its programme head Rusmawati Abdullah said data from the Social Welfare Department could be used for the purpose, and the initiative would provide insights and prioritise areas that lack sufficient resources for the autistic community. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri ..

Nancy Shukri said as of Oct 31, there were 33 autism care centres in the country while the number of autistic individuals with learning disabilities in the same period totalled 65,191. She said the government could target regions in need of support and ensure a more equitable distribution of care and services for autistic individuals across the country, especially in underserved areas. ???The mapping effort could serve as a foundation for future policy decisions and resource allocation, improving the quality of care and services for individuals with autism.??? She said while the services are more accessible in the Klang Valley area, there is a need for centres in northern and southern Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. ???The shortage stems from the increasing prevalence of autism, limited facilities, lack of trained professionals and financial constraints faced by families. While we have made strides in addressing autism care, the infrastructure is inadequate to meet the demand.??? She said limited private sector involvement, underfunded NGOs filling service gaps, low public awareness on autism care???s financial needs, geographical inequalities in rural and semi-urban areas, and high initial infrastructure costs hinder the expansion of autism care services. Johor Disabled Children Charitable and Cares Organisation founder and president Dr Yahya Haidrus said the gap between service demand and availability is substantial, with many existing centres being overcrowded, resulting in long waiting lists and limited one-on-one support. He said there is limited availability of specialised training programmes in Malaysia, which affects the quality of care being provided. ???Many caregivers and therapists lack the skills to handle complex autism cases while the shortage of certified professionals has resulted in unequal access to therapy. This highlights the need for service expansion.??? Hua Ming Autism Society members echoed the concerns and said the shortage of autism care services has placed significant strain on families through stress and financial burden as they are left to manage without adequate support. ???While help exists through various agencies, it is insufficient. Collaboration between government bodies, NGOs and private companies needs improvement and faster implementation,??? it said in a statement to theSun . UiTM Faculty of Communication and Media Studies senior lecturer Dr Mohd Yusof Zulkefli, who is also an expert in autism and communication, said the gap between available care centres and the number of autistic individuals in the country underscores a systemic inadequacy in service provision. ???This disparity often leaves families with limited access to essential support, resulting in delayed intervention, unequal opportunities for skills development and heightened financial stress. The lack of sufficient facilities also places pressure on existing centres, potentially compromising the quality of care.??? He said insufficient care centres delay access to critical therapies that improve communication, social interaction and cognitive skills, especially when early intervention is pivotal for shaping the developmental trajectory of children with autism. ???A comprehensive national policy focused exclusively on autism care that includes early diagnosis and intervention programmes in all primary healthcare facilities is crucial as developmental milestone tracking for children starts from infancy.???

???Sustain momentum for new year resolution success??? - 27/12 7:21 am

PETALING JAYA: As Malaysians gear up to welcome 2025, New Year resolutions are usually made, and for some, they are broken just as easily. HRDC-certified coach and former news anchor Sheahnee Iman Lee offers key insights into keeping resolutions. ???The challenge often lies in sustaining the momentum beyond the first week of January. People who approach their resolutions with the right tools have a higher chance of success,??? she said. Lee points to practical aids such as tracking apps, gym ..

memberships with personal trainers, or just marking a calendar with small daily goals to provide accountability and help maintain focus. Reflecting on her journey, Lee shares a resolution that had a profound impact on her life. ???I never had much success with resolutions because, like many people, I could barely keep the momentum going for more than a week. But the one resolution I succeeded in, which made a huge impact on my life, was to quit smoking. ???That was in 2008. I was about to get married and hoped to have kids. I wanted to be in the best possible health to be a wife and mother. My sense of purpose going into 2009 was strong, and within six months, I was smoke-free. ???I???m very proud of myself for sticking to that resolution and making it last. Now I need to find that same purpose for my weight loss.??? Lee said many people struggle to keep their resolutions due to the lack of motivation and practicality. While most individuals have a clear idea of their desired outcome, the steps they take to achieve it often prove unrealistic or unsustainable. She emphasised that resolutions are more likely to succeed when they align with an individual???s lifestyle and values. ???Going into the new year with a vision is great, but it???s important that we recognise that real change takes time, achievable small steps, and long-term commitment. ???We are so lucky to be able to live in an age where we can find any app or tool we need to help us achieve our goals, though finding the right tools is a process of trial and error.??? Lee said when setting goals one should focus on a clear, strong purpose. For instance, instead of merely aiming to improve fitness, a more effective approach would involve setting a specific milestone, such as transitioning from daily walks to running and eventually completing a half-marathon within the year. ???It???s important to align such goals with personal health motivations, as these connections can provide a deeper sense of commitment,??? she said. Lee stressed that support systems play an invaluable role in maintaining motivation. ???The support system is everything. Things are going to get tough. There will be days one can???t get out of bed and do what one set out to do. ???Having a supportive partner who will say, ???Come, I???ll go with you,??? makes all the difference.??? For those feeling overwhelmed by the idea of setting resolutions, She recommended starting small, with just one major goal, and breaking it into smaller, achievable steps. Lee said focusing on incremental progress makes the journey towards self-improvement more manageable and less daunting. She also emphasised the importance of aligning resolutions with one???s personal values and life purpose. ???Ask yourself how your resolution will improve your life and make you happier.???

Growing market for fake products concerning??? - 27/12 7:15 am

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia???s growing prominence as a centre for counterfeit products presents far-reaching consequences for the national economy, local businesses and consumer behaviour, said economist and Global Labour Organisation lead for Southeast Asia Prof Niaz Asadullah. ???The International Chamber of Commerce put global counterfeiting and piracy losses at over US$2.3 trillion (RM10.29 trillion) annually. Malaysia???s strategic trade position in Southeast Asia makes the country highly ..

vulnerable as well, and even a slight fall in GDP due to counterfeiting could cost billions in revenue and taxes.??? On Jan 8, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry embarked on a crackdown on the counterfeit goods market, which is said to be worth some RM300 billion per annum. Its enforcement division director-general Datuk Azman Adam said between January and November 2023, RM14.9 million worth of counterfeit goods were seized from hotspots in Jalan Petaling, Jalan Chow Kit and Jalan Kenanga in Kuala Lumpur. The ministry???s Johor director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo said it disposed over RM2.1 million in counterfeit goods as of Dec 16, involving 152 cases. ???We also handled 1,287 cases of illicit distribution and sales, with seizures totalling RM29.7 million and fines amounting to RM1.33 million. ???Between January and December, 66 cases involving Malaysian suspects and two involving foreigners were linked to counterfeit goods under the Trademarks Act. The cases saw the seizures of products worth RM320,435.60.??? Niaz said counterfeit luxury items have become increasingly popular among younger tourists, such as Gen Z travellers from South Korea who are drawn to them and genuine secondhand products. ???The convenience of online marketplaces has fuelled this demand. The growing market undermines legitimate businesses, causing significant declines in economic activity and tax revenue.??? SMEs in Malaysia bear the brunt of the issue since counterfeit goods divert sales from genuine products that are more expensive to produce due to regulatory compliance and quality standards. A check by theSun showed online live sales on platforms such as Shopee and TikTok often feature luxury handbags marketed as ???exact copy ori???, complete with serial numbers and authentic-looking designs that are sold at between RM200 and RM400 or more, with sellers claiming the products ???might be genuine???, leaving buyers to rely on luck for authenticity. Niaz said over time, the presence of counterfeit products would discourage businesses from investing in research and development, stifling innovation and the introduction of better products. He stressed that beyond financial losses, the proliferation of counterfeit pharmaceuticals and personal care items poses serious public health risks, amplifying the social costs of counterfeiting. ???Poor awareness on the dangers of counterfeit food or medicines worsens the problem,??? he said, adding that counterfeit goods distort market dynamics by undercutting legitimate product prices, creating unfair competition and disincentivising quality adherence among local businesses. He emphasised the need for a multi-faceted strategy, and said strengthening Malaysia???s legal framework by imposing stricter penalties on counterfeiters and enhancing enforcement of intellectual property rights are crucial. He also highlighted the importance of international collaboration, particularly with China and Hong Kong, which account for 84% of global counterfeit seizures. ???Enhanced intelligence sharing and cross-border cooperation could help dismantle counterfeit networks. Majlis Peguam gesa Terengganu, Kerajaan Pusat pertimbang semula sebatan di .. - 26/12 10:53 pm

Kesalahan Jenayah Syariah (Takzir) (Terengganu) 2022, berkata hukuman sedemikian melucutkan maruah individu.
