90 people have taken their own lives already. How many more do they want? .. Indeterminate sentences were scrapped in 2 but thousands of prisoners are still serving them, often for petty crimes, with no hope of release. Could there now be hope of resentencing? Tony Woodley is raging at the injustice of it all. Enough is enough, says the Labour peer who has introduced a private members bill to resentence prisoners still serving time under imprisonment for public protection (IPP), which was abolished 12 years ago because it was regarded as an affront to decency. Although .. the sentence was banned, it wasnt done so retrospectively, which means that almost 3,000 IPP prisoners are still inside, mostly for minor crimes, not knowing when, or if, they will ever be released. IPP is so horrific, Woodley says, that often people dont believe him when he tells them about it. If you said to somebody: Youve got 16 years in jail for stealing a plant pot, theyd say: Youre the bloody plant pot for saying that! People wouldnt believe or didnt want to believe some of the cases weve highlighted. Continue reading... |

What in Me Is Dark by Orlando Reade review the afterlife of Paradise Lost The writers, philosophers and politicians who have raided Miltons epic poem for inspiration In 1818 Mary Shelley published Frankenstein, the story of a man who trespasses on Gods turf by crafting a new form of life. She took its epigraph from Book X of John Miltons Paradise Lost, when Adam rages at God like a teenager who didnt ask to be born. Shelley returned to Milton for 1826s The Last Man, a grim, grief-sodden read about an annihilating pandemic: Let no man seek / Henceforth to be foretold .. what shall befall / Him or his children. One novel describes the creation of life, the other its destruction, and both open with Paradise Lost. It is no surprise that Miltons epic figured in the genesis of science fiction. Orlando Reade suggests that it might be the most influential poem in English, frequently stripped for parts. In relatively recent years, it has furnished the titles of Philip Pullman s His Dark Materials trilogy and Nick Caves Red Right Hand, influenced the collapse of the candy-pink Eden in Greta Gerwigs Barbie and undergirded the series three finale of The Good Place, whose title, Pandemonium, is one of many Miltonic neologisms. As a young man, Milton dreamed of creating an epic poem so written to aftertimes, as they should not willingly let it die. That hope was fulfilled, in ways he could not have comprehended. 25/12 3:00 pm | The Order review Jude Law does solid work in vehement account of white .. Nicholas Hoult plays a wannabe far-right martyr, and Law and Tye Sheridan the feds on his tail, in a well-cast if anticlimactic true-crime tale Justin Kurzel directs a workmanlike true-crime thriller about a real-life American white supremacist movement called the Order, which, in the 1980s, murdered Jewish radio journalist Alan Berg and pulled off bank robberies to fund a planned national insurrection. Its leader, Bob Mathews, sought a creepy martyrdom involving an Alamo-style standoff with .. federal agents at the groups remote farmhouse in Washington state. Screenwriter Zach Baylin (Oscar-nominated for King Richard) adapts the book about the case, The Silent Brotherhood, by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt; Nicholas Hoult plays the baby-faced Mathews, with Jude Law and Tye Sheridan as the (fictional-composite) officers battling to take him down. Kurzel contrives a solid, vehement film, with Law and Hoult proving to be interestingly cast; there are well-turned action sequences and on-the-nose dramatic beats about white-power fanatics pursuing their gruesome dream while the sweaty, unhappy good guys obsess about the job and neglect their families. But this isnt Kurzels best work; it feels like something for streaming TV rather than the big screen, and is pretty two-dimensional and straightforward compared with Nitram or True History of the Kelly Gang . I wondered how Michael Mann might have played the shootouts, and how Jeremy Saulnier (who has a producer credit here) might have got more subversively inside the neo-Nazis granite skulls. 25/12 2:00 pm | Katherine Parkinson on Rivals: Im just a normal 47-year-old woman who has .. Her dynamite romance with Danny Dyer in the raunchy Jilly Cooper hit is the living definition of screen chemistry. The actor opens up about booze, being sexual and why the porn generation have got it all wrong If Rivals wasnt your standout show of 2024, so be it. It takes all sorts. But if it was, youll be in no doubt which was the truest, purest love story. Lizzie Vereker the self-effacing erotica author, bullied by her husband is supposed to be plain in the original text, but is played by the .. luminous Katherine Parkinson. Freddie the rich but never greedy entrepreneur, bullied by his wife is meant to be past his best, but is played with low-key, knowing magnetism by Danny Dyer. They are absolute dynamite together as they fall in love: sweet and romantic but also really hot, the living definition of screen chemistry. It doesnt have to be romantic chemistry, says Parkinson, speaking to me from her home in London. Its just when youre with an actor whos similarly open, really up for the thrill of the ride. Its thrilling when youre in flow together. Ive had anti-chemistry, too, and its been awful. Its especially peculiar when youve read Jilly Coopers book a load of times, and you know the A-couple is meant to be Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and Taggie OHara (Bella Maclean). 25/12 10:20 am | Ukraine war briefing: North Korean troops yet to make major impact on .. Missile strike targets residential building in Kryvyi Rih; Christmas celebrations across Ukraine shrouded in grief. What we know on day 1,036 See all our Ukraine war coverage A ballistic missile struck an apartment building in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih on Tuesday, killing one person and injuring 15 , four of them seriously, officials said. Ukrainian officials denounced the Christmas Eve attack on the city, President Volodymyr Zelenskyys home town. While other countries of the .. world are celebrating Christmas, Ukrainians are continuing to suffer from endless Russian attacks, Ukraines human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, wrote on Telegram. A massive missile attack pummelled Ukraines northeastern city of Kharkiv, injuring at least three people, local mayor Igor Terekhov said on Wednesday morning. Kharkiv is under a massive missile attack. A series of explosions were heard in the city and there are still ballistic missiles heading towards the city, he wrote on Telegram. Ukraines energy minister said Russia was bombarding the power sector, without specifying which cities were under fire. The enemy is again massively attacking the energy sector, Minister of Energy German Galushchenko wrote on social media platform Telegram. The transmission system operator is taking the necessary measures to limit consumption to minimise the negative consequences for the energy system. Russia has intensified its attacks on the Ukrainian energy sector, damaging almost half of its generating capacity and causing hours-long blackouts throughout the country. Nearly three years into the Russian invasion, Christmas celebrations across Ukraine are shrouded in grief. Not all of us are home, unfortunately. Sadly, not everyone has a home. And tragically, not everyone is still with us, Zelenskyy said in an address. This will be the first Christmas that Lyubov spends without her son Taras Onyskiv, who died aged 32 in May while fighting off Russian troops on the eastern front. She brought a Christmas tree to her sons grave in the Lychakiv cemetery in south-eastern Lviv, covered in a dusting of fresh snow. Well come and spend Christmas here, she said, after wrapping fairy lights over the tombstone. Mariya Lun lost her son Yuri in 2022. We will bring Christmas porridge here on Christmas Eve, Lun said. We will pray that it will be easy for him in heaven without us. Zelenskyy signed a law in July 2023 to move the official Christmas Day holiday to 25 December, departing from the Russian Orthodox Church tradition of celebrating on 7 January. The presence of North Korean soldiers alongside Russian troops in the Russian region of Kursk has not yet had a major impact on the course of the fighting, a Ukrainian military intelligence official has said. The involvement of the North Koreans in the fighting has not had a significant impact on the situation. It is not such a significant number of personnel, Yevgen Yerin, spokesperson for the Ukrainian military intelligence service (GUR), told AFP. But they are also learning. And we cannot underestimate the enemy. And we can see that they are already taking some things into account in their activities, he added. A Russian court has sentenced a man to 22 years in prison for two acts of sabotage on railway lines in Crimea last year. The court said Pavel Levchenko was recruited and trained by Ukraines SBU security service and sent to the annexed Crimea to carry out acts of terrorism. The court said Levchenko had carried out two explosions on railway lines while cargo trains were passing and had planned more acts of sabotage. Russia annexed Ukraines Crimea peninsula in 2014. Ukraine said Russia attacked it with 60 drones, of which 36 were downed, 23 were jammed by electronic warfare and one was still in the air. The Ukrainian air force said drones had been shot down in eight regions across the country in a statement posted on the Telegram app on Tuesday. Continue reading... |
